Humans made him so mean to scare the believers.
It's a great tactic to demand loyalty from your followers. If you give people a choice, then they may go for the easier religions. But if you scare the hell out of them, then you have a pretty good scam going.
As a church leader, which would get the undivided attention of your people: an ambivalent god who doesn't mind what the people do or a jealous, capricious god who demands that the people give you money and manpower?
Fear is a great motivation. People who believe in the God who abused Lot and Job will believe that God could send them to Hell for any reason. And only the church leader can save them if they just listen to him.
Religion is a great means of controlling people. How many people would willingly blow themselves up? Yet, the jihad is tricking innocent people into killing themselves for the corrupt Muslim leaders. It's brilliant and frightening.
Edit: Someone just pointed out that the trials of Lot and Job were caused by Satan and not by God. I decided to post my response to him as further clarification of this answer:
And God allowed the evil to happen. He destroyed Lot's home (not to mention the throngs of people who still lived there), as well as allow Lot's daughters to live so that they may rape him later.
God also placed Job in the dreadful position. Satan would not have even had a chance to torment Job if God did not instigate him. God is portrayed as petty in the Bible when he tells Satan that Job is the perfect servant. This drives Satan to jealousy, and he asks God for permission to torment him. God could have said no, but instead he simply said, "Just don't kill him."
And let us not forget the 42 children that God killed in response to them poking fun at Elisha.
The Bible paints God in a very negative light, and there are many false church leaders who use these stories to coerce their followers. After all, if God is willing to kill children just for being children, then God is willing to punish anyone for anything.

Hmm.... it depends on you, do u believe or not..
If you don't then not only God is be mean but much more than that!
If you do, then I am a believer too. God is never mean, He's blessed u with many things that some how you managed not to see and just focus on what you don't have or what you once had then lost!
There’s nothing I hate more than lectures and I have no intention to give you one here, but
Life is full with ups and downs. I don’t think there’s anything harder (or meaner if you wish) than losing a close person. That’s life. It’s not only about you and you should believe that things happen for a reason. You may not understand them, but you will certainly do in the future
Seriously, if you are healthy, have got food and shelter (Apparently u do) just thank God for all of that and Work on improving your life so you can get what you want!

The existence of evil is often used as an argument against the existence of God. But it's actually the proof. If you believe that there is such a thing as evil or a bad thing, you are acknowledging that there is a God. After all, if there were no God, there would be no objective basis for morality i.e. no good and no bad. Murdering babies would just be a thing, same as riding a bike. That you recognize it is evil means you recognize there is good.
God gave you that sense of good and evil so you could know he exists and seek him, if you have the courage. Take heart, friend.

the concept of the god I think you are refurring to, was just created so that people can live with the "security" that they have someplace to go after they die.. to blame god saying he's mean is the same thing as blameing santa clause ie blaming a nonexistant being for problems when you should be blaming Karma bc you know as the saying goes: what goes around comes around and anything you do in a past life will come back around and bite ya in the @**

God is not mean. God IS holy. It is man that is sinful. As a result what has happened to man is his own destruction in various ways. God has provided a way out through His Son but in order to get man's attention God allows things to happen that we consider bad. God is also love and it is up to man to either to accept it or reject it.

God is not mean. The devil is mean. He brought all the evil and sin into the world. God meant for the world to be us roaming naked and carefree, with no jobs, worries or sickness, murders or death, around the Garden of Eden. Satan tempted Eve to sin, Eve got Adam to sin by eating the forbidden fruit. From there we have to suffer everyday and work hard, endure illness and abuse, murder and death, because of Satan, not God. God LET them (and us today) use our free wills to make our own choices. Don't blame God. He only LETS us choose to do what we do. If you are sorry for your sins and confess to Him and believe His Son Jesus Christ died on the cross for you, and accept Him into your heart, you can live forever with God in heaven and enjoy the peace He meant for us to have eternally.

God created a universe of existence that is founded on rules and laws and populated by creatures with free will who will perpetually attempt to violate those laws.
He didn't make us puppets, which means we can hurt or be hurt by others.
He isn't our crutch, because covering and undoing our mistakes and the mistakes of others would prevent us from ever learning.
Every child thinks a parent is mean when they are refused or prevented from exercising their will, even when doing so breaks the rules and puts them in harms way.
Which one of the "mean" laws would you like to suspend? Aging? Death? Disease? Without it, in one year we would be up to our knees in bugs. We would walk across the oceans on the backs of dehydrated fish wallowing in algae slime.
I saw a sign once..."Obey Gravity. It's the law!"
If everyone knew the rules and obeyed them would your question ever be asked?

Why does everything get blamed on God?
If someone does something to hurt another person, it's not God that did it. It's the person who chose to hurt another person. If nature causes catastrophy, it's just nature. A car accident....well, most accidents aren't really accidents. More like carelessness on someone's part. Going to fast, too slow, not watching for wildlife...what have you.
Sadly I think this world has become very "Me me me" orietated, so when something goes wrong, instead of looking at ourselves, or just trying to fix things we try to blame someone else...or in this case a diety believed in or not.
