E.Coli is a normal type of bacteria that we all have in our gut. It is usually harmless unless it finds itself in the wrong place, like the bladder. It is one of the most common organisms which cause bladder infections.

Children can have bladder infections and not be able to tell their parents or caregivers what is wrong. They can often run high fevers and if not treated can develop infection up the urinary tract towards the kidneys and can get really sick if the infection spreads into the blood.

Fortunately, most kids will respond to oral antibiotic therapy. Those that are sicker will require admission to hospital for IV fluid support and IV antibiotics.

E.coli is generally treatable with sulfa drugs, nitrofurantoin, and ciprofloxacin (though cipro and other fluoroquinolones cannot be used in children).

It is not uncommon for little girls to have urinary tract infections, as their urethra is very short and bacteria can easily enter the bladder. If this happens recurrently, however, then further investigation may be necessary to rule out an underlying anatomical cause for the infection. In little boys, however, urinary tract infections are rare unless there is a predisposing factor such as an abnormally located opening in the penis or an obstruction of the urethra from posterior urethral valves or urethral stricture.

This means that the child has urinary tract infection. The organism E. coli should be treated with an appropriate antibiotic, such as nalidixic acid. The child should be investigated for an underlying problem in the kidney leading to infection, such as stones or vesicoureteral reflux. Investigations including ultrasound examination and voiding cystourethrogram should be done. Give him more fluids to drink.

Escherichia coli is responsible for nearly all cases of urinary tract infection and it typically has little to no resistance. In a child the treatment is most often with a sulfa antibiotic in combination with trimethoprim as SMZ TMP which is the generic for Bactrim suspension. In this age group urinary tract infections are almost never serious unless they prove difficult to treat or if they become recurrent in which case further study of the genito urinary system (usually by xray) is warranted.

E Coli In Urine Culture

it means stool has gotten into the urethra (where the pee comes out) and has caused a bladder infection. treatment is antibiotics, making sure baby is wiped from front to back, no bubble baths and kept in clean, dry diapers. this is more common in little girls as it it hard to keep the stool from mixing in the diaper and shorter route to bladder. e. coli by the way lives in stool and this is why it can happen so easily.
