You really think so? Read more on hinduism and make your judgement-
Hinduism: can be best defined as Sanatana Dharma... something which exists from times immemorial. Hinduism does not have a beginning... it exists ever since Humanity came into existence. The bane of Hinduism is Dharma... which also forms the base of all Religions existing on Mother Earth. No Religion can ever survive without a Dharma. Dharma is the root of all Religions. Why?
Talking of Jainism we cannot understand the basics without delving into the Life of the 24th Tirthankara Bhagwan Mahavira. It was only in the time of the 24th Tirthankara Bhagwan Mahavira that Jainism rightly came into existence. Whatever form of Jainism existed before the 24th Tirthankara was limited to the Spiritual Masters only. All that was knowable to these Spiritual Masters was not available to the masses for the prime reason that the intellect of a common man was not as developed as was required to fathom the depths of the Sacred Wisdom we know as jaina doctrines.
During the times of Bhagwan Mahavira... the common masses came to understand what was being taught by the masters of the era. Gradually as the momentum picked up... the followers of Jaina doctrine came to be known as Jains and the following Jainism. Before Bhagwan Mahavira the existence of Jainism as such did not hold good as it was only limited to the Spiritual Masters of the day.
Similarly, the Teachings of Gautama Buddha came to be known as Buddhism and its followers Buddhists. Buddhism is also known as the eightfold path. Gautama Buddha advocated the eightfold path also known as the middle path for he realized that not while living in the family and nor while attempting the Life of the dense forests could one gain knowledge of the Sacred Scriptures. He advocated maintaining a balance between the two and advised the common man to take the middle path. Neither getting totally immersed in family Life nor practicing austere practices to its extreme.
We need to understand that before the advent of Gautama Buddha... there was nothing we can call as Buddhism. The Teachings of Gautama Buddha primarily form the core Teachings of Buddhism. The existence of Buddhism Religion... the following of Gautama Buddha came into being only after the advent of Gautama Buddha.
In Christianity also, the core Teachings of the Bible contain the Essence of the Teachings of Jesus Christ and his trusted followers. Before the advent of Jesus Christ nothing existed on Mother Earth we could call as Christianity. The following of Jesus Christ is known as Christianity and the followers Christians.
Similarly, before the advent of Prophet Mohammed there existed nothing we could call as Islam. The advent of Islamic Dharma came into being after Prophet Mohammed and his Teachings came into the scene. The followers of the Islamic Dharma are called Islamists and also Muslims and the Teachings of Prophet Mohammed are contained in the sacred book of Islamic Dharma, the Koran. Well if there is one thing that the Hindu religion teaches u it's that u should respect each and every living thing, because according to Hindu religion, there is a fraction of divinity in each and every living thing, be it a human being , an animal or an insect, now I don't know from where Cow worship arose, but I guess in the past a cow's milk must have been a very easy source of good nutrition,so I guess that is how cow worship arose.
You know what there is a day when we even worship the dogs, and the rats, I think it's kinda cute not silly, and I don't hate you for saying this, I know to someone else it would sound silly, if you come down to india some day I'll show you around, and I'll introduce to my grandparents, they will tell ypu precisely why we worship cows. :)

Ok. But one problem... hinduism, even if you don't count buddhism, is not really one religion anyway. Your illustration of Hinduism and its concepts and rituals is simplistic, at best. That is our western perception of Hinduism, but that perception is inaccurate. That right there shoots down your argument. For the sake of argument, though, let's treat Hinduism like one, single belief system. Offshoot of the many hindu religions? Sure. Part of hinduism? Hardly. That is like saying Islam is part of Christianity just because they believe in the God of Abraham. In any case, when you say "the only reason that Buddhism actually became a separate religion was because Buddhists (followers of Buddha) chose to establish their social, cultural and political identity independent of mainstream Hindus," you are basically giving a good reason why Buddhism should NOT be considered merely a part of Hinduism. Most religions sprung from something, but then they evolve into their own thing. Buddhism has clearly done this very thing. Yes, there are similar roots and some similar beliefs, but that is true of any two religions, or pretty much any belief system or concept. Similar is not the same. Buddhism is its own thing.

The fact that you know about Hinduism is "worshipping a cow" tells a lot about how much you know about it !
Worshipping a cow is a tradition followed, and yes you will find no temple, no altar that is dedicated to the cow. People simply express gratitiude to the humble, giving qualities of a cow...that is it. That gradtitude comes from a peaceful state of mind and heart...honoring every living being, a quality of this religion/path. Somehow in the west it is blown out of proportion. Akin to saying christianity means enjoying the turkey on thanksgiving ! no relation right ? You see that !?
If you want to really understand the "Sanatan Dharma" (eternal way of life) or what came to be known by recently as Hinduism, you have to delve deeper into the spiritual aspects of it rather than the symbolic/traditional aspects.
Read this from one of the blossomed sages of this ancient path:

Lemme see, another intellectually challeneged, language challenged Muslim trying to act smart, eh?
You're right, what sane person worships a cow? Hindus don't worship a cow, you see.
Now let me see, what sane person will follow a "Religion" that says these things?
Men are superior to women (surah 2:228). Women have half the rights of men: in court witness (surah 2:282) and in inheritance
(surah 4:11). A man may punish his wife by beating her (surah 4:34). A man may marry up to four wives at the same time (surah 4:3). A wife is a sex object for her husband (surah 2:223).
Stealing is punished by the amputation of the hands (surah 5:38).
Adultery is punished by public flogging (surah 24:2).
Heaven is the place where a Muslim will be reclining, eating meats and delicious fruits, drinking exquisite wines, and engaging in sex with virgins (surah 55:54- 56) &
(surah 52:17,19).
A Muslim must not take a Jew or a a Christian for a friend (surah 5:51). Muslims must fight until their opponents submit to Islam (surah 9:29). Resisting Islam is punished by death, crucifixion or the cutting off of the hands and feet (surah 5:33).
A Muslim apostate[one who wishes to convert to another religion] must be killed (surah 9:12).
Now, you tell me, how "sane" is all this?

It is no more insane that any other self-story that a group of people develop to explain how the universe came into being, how life began, and why humans seem to be different from other life.
Hindus see a divine spark in everything inthe natural world - all animals, not just a cow. Various animals are respected for qualities that humans might want to emulate.
Religion isn't subject to the same kinds of "reason" that scientific rationalism is. I daresay that your religion, whtever it is, would fail that test, too.
Take a World Religions course in school.

Its a little more complex than cow worshipping. Hinduism is one of the worlds oldest religion and contains quite a good deal of wisdom. The gods aren't taken literally by all followers of Hinduism. It's actually a pretty cool religion. As for "holding them down," India is seen as one of the next economic powerhouses. That's why Wal Mart is trying so hard to get in there.

I am not Hindu, but come on man. Get your facts straight. They don't worship cows, they consider them holy, big difference. Also, don't you think it is a little crazy to believe that a man was born from a virgin, died for everyone on earths signs, came back to life, and then floated up to heaven? And that he was the son of God and God at the same time. Now that sounds crazy. Or maybe the story of everyone on earth drowning except one man, who somehow fit two of every animal on earth on a boat, without the animals killing each other (how did he collect microscopic animals and small insects, such as lice?). Now that sounds crazy. I could go on for hours, but you get the point.

All religions are smackass crazy. That's the definition of religion. Worshiping a cow isn't any weirder than worshiping an invisible man in the sky.

That is all because the people have mixed up symbols with history and (so called) reality. It is all to long ago, so there is almost nobody anymore, who knew/knows what was meant by that cow-symbol. Myself included!! So, people take everything much to literally, just like in all the other religions, by the way!!!!
