we were trying to stop Communism. there was a thing called the domino effect and it said if it starts to spread to another country then it will fall onto the next country and so on.

I recommend to you the book "A Bright Shinning Lie,America in Vietnam" by Neil Sheenan,this book won the Pulitzer Prize,don't see the HBO TV-Movie that was made of it,read the book instead,the reason why America went to war there is clearly explained,find the book today.

Why do we have the war in Iraq...? At that time we feared that if Vietnam went communist all of Asia will do the same...as we know that never happened...Not the same reason for war but both driven by fear...Our own!!

We were afraid of Communisn taking over the world. But there's nothing wrong with the concept of Communism. It was the dictators that was the problem. We also thought we could help the South Vietnamese people from being forced to except the North Vietnamese peoples ideas.

Pick your theory: to stop the spread of Communism; to fight a war with the USSR without taking them head on; because the the military/industrial complex and Bell Helicopters wanted to make a lot of money; because every few decades we need to "thin the herd" i.e. get young men killed so the population can be controlled, blah blah blah.
