All the answers you have been given so far are all okay but bit torrents and the like can be very slow (3 days to download a movie....no thanks).
I use usenet, it downloads as fast as your internet connection will allow. I have an 8mb internet connection and can download a 700Mb file in around 12 minutes, I can download the exact same file with bit torrent and it can take up to 2 - 8 hours (depending on the amount of users actually sharing (seeding) the file.

I like Frostwire better than Limewire (it's almost exactly the same though -- so if you hate limewire you won't like frostwire)

WinMX and Soulseek are good for songs if you keep pulling up fake songs on limewire/frostwire.
bittorrent is good. You need a client (like utorrent) then you need to visit sites, like mininova.org or demonoid.com or piratebay.org to find torrents. (this is a little different than p2p but it's very popular... you might have to read a few things about it before you can use it easily)

P2P programs arent illegal. Using them to download copyrighted material is illegal.
The best ones i find are:
Limewire - Good for Individual songs
utorrent - Good for albums, games and movies.
More and more websites are using torrents so save bandwidth and money so its always handy to have a bit torrent client installed.

I use Ares. No spyware no viruses, never a problem unlike the millions I was faced with when using Limewire.
I also highly recommend using Azureus and downloading bit torrents.

Try Bitsoup, but you must first download uTorrent, they work both together. Top class, for music ,films and games..

Try napster. I personally love bearshare pro. you can get it for free on the internet if you look hard enough. its ultra fast.

no they are all illegal and filled with viruses. buy the music and software, its safer and legal.
