When was the last time the engine was tuned up? That would be a good place to start (that includes replacing All filters)

You may want to check the engine compartment to see if the mechanical fuel pump (Yours may be electric) is leaking. Check while the engine is running for puddling or spraying in the engine compartment, also if it is carburetted, take the air cleaner off and see if there is any gas pools on the intake manifold. With that type of consumption I would let the car run for 5 or 10 minutes and looking for leaks. It could be anywhere from the tank to the carb. If not then a rebuild carb and a tune up are in order.

Other than the mileage does the car run ok? How many miles are on the car? Info, You must give more info! If it doesn't then I would suspect that it either needs a tune up, or maybe a carb rebuild and a fuel filter change. Are you sure that it has a carb and that it is not an injector system? They are very easy to confuse. Either way, if it needs a rebuild I would suggest just going to Advance Auto, Autozone, or Pep Boys and getting a rebuilt one. It makes things a lot easier to just swap it out as to trying to rebuild it.

a good guess would be the choke on the carb being stuck gas cap sound is normal if you have the choke cleaned and adjusted it may fix it i had the same problem with a carbeurated car i also had to change the oil and plugs as excess gas ran past the pistons and into the bottom of engine mixing with the oil

Its an old car. I have a V6 and get 340 miles per tank. Its a Z24 convertible '93 and is still very good to me. I love mustangs too but if you are unhappy with it take it down (or up) to Indianapolis and I am sure some red neck will take it off your hands.
