Okay, I may start investing in cameras, and zooming equipment, and want to know what is out there that is proven to use. Not just a name you saw somewhere or heard what was good, but have actually used, and would stake your good name on.

I do use disposable cameras, but there are times when you need to zoom in tight to get a good shot, and there are times when you need to get a good action shot, and times when time is of the essence.

Thank you so much, in advance, for your information, insight, input, and thoughtful consideration.

The Canon 10D is an amazing digital/SLR hybrid that takes fantastic pictures all the time and is easy to use. The memory card holds hundreds of high-res pictures, and with the right light settings it's almost impossible to take a bad shot. A little expensive, but you will own it for the rest of your life.

In response to your question, I have used Nikon brand film cameras for over 20 years,(Nikon FM,FM2 and N90). Other than wearing out the shutter, I have not had any problems with these cameras. However I recently went digital with the D50. I have found that my old tried and true lenses do not work with the D50
nor does my flash units work in ttl mode. I bring this to your attention only because which ever brand you start out with make sure that when you upgrade your old equipment will work with the new.

No disposables, no digitals, just good old fashioned 35 mm for me. I like Nikkon the best, but Canon is also good.

It depends on your skill level and your objective. Go with a point and shoot digital if you are just wanting to get shots on vacation. If you are a more serious photographer look for reviews to help make your decision. Try going to http://www.dpreview.com.
