When atheists such as myself ask for proof, believers - Christian, Muslim, whatever - always cite some rubbish from their holy books as proof. When will they realise that this self-referencing proof just doesn't cut it? Is it because they think we are as gullible as they are?

Considering that they are trying to "prove" ridiculousness and superstitious delusions, it is all they have. That is why arguing with a Christian (or any religionist) is like playing chess with a pigeon, they knock over all the pieces, crap on the board, then fly home to their flock to declare victory.

You know I can actually relate to what you are saying cuz I have been there.. I didn't/don't just recite stuff from the BIBLE to proof a point.. Science has done a good job at providing more than enough evidence that substantiates the existence of a higher being...
As for physical evidence, JESUS is as close as it gets ...
He was real , alive and walked here..
Witnesses proved this .. They ate, walked, communed, and were taught by him...
The question I have for you is...

WHY WOULD ANY SANE PERSON DIE FOR ANOTHER ON JUST PURE SPECULATION???

I know I wouldn't...

Let me ask you this.. If JESUS were to stand in front of you ... Walk and talk to you .. Have dinner with you and be your teacher.. If he preformed miracles in front of you ..

Would you believe it then....??

The apostles did all this and most of them were killed because of what they believed ...
It wasn't just hear say .. THEY SEEN IT 1ST HAND...

You don't have to read the BIBLE to know this.. There are ancient text everywhere now adays and proof is abundant...

The BIBLE is a guide for believers yes, Its our biggest proof but there are other ways to get to the truth.... Ancient text, science, history itself can prove it.. Anthropology...Archeology.... Thats just a few...

If someone really wants to know the truth, there is an overload of information to chose from. Its just a matter of wether that person wants to look or not...

You seem to have your mind made up thou so most of this info I give is not going to seem helpful...

As for being guillable.. No , I do not put myself in a category as guillable.. I have studied this subject far too long to be deemed guillable,,,

I was once where you are now.... I found what I needed and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the proof is there...
If you want it...

Also, I do not claim a religious preference, I claim a spiritual preference... There is a big difference between the 2...Religions fight .... Spirtual beings do not.....

I hope that some day you will allow yourself to expand on GOD ...

And not meaning to sound rude but it takes a very open minded person to believe that a higher power does exist...
Christians do not have the luxury of being narrow minded ...except when it comes to our FAITH...

We will always believe what we believe and we will always without a shred of doubt follow that belief ..If we have to die for that belief, then so be it....We have the assurance that there is a better life ....

I know this is a hard pill to swallow but I've been where you are .. I have had a hard time with the whole GOD thing at one point in my life.. Long ago :)

I hope and pray that some day you too may find the truth but you gotta want to ..
Go look for the truth.. read and research....and if you still do not believe , then so be it....

Wow, you really hit a nerve with some people! To really answer your question, though, what else can anyone use but some reference to their beliefs in order to support it! Whatever you believe you use other sources of material to support it. This is true in science and religion, everything! You have to realize that absolute proof is impossible. No one can prove anything absolutely, we can only assert theories based on experience and observation. This is why science works so well, it has a self-correcting mechanism built into it!

As for proving the existence of God, yes I agree "faith" alone does not cut it. But I think once you realize that no one can prove anything absolutely you won't ask too much of others! But, you don't help your argument by calling their sources rubbish or using disrespectful statements. And it gives other atheists and agonists (like myself) a bad rep. Remember, you can always ask hard questions with respect and courtesy, and that equally applies to the religious and the non-religious.

When you ask, "does God exist?"

I answer "of course" and then I ask "if God didn't exist how did we get here?"

You answer "the big bang" right? A mass of gases which one day exploded and created the universe. We only knew this after mankind began exploring space i.e. with the Hubble space telescope, right?

So if a religion stated centuries before the theory came about, we have to beleive that something more advanced than man must have written / spoken/ revealed this right? Because there is no way man was advanced enough to know this at that time, with out modern tools.

So when the Quran says:

"Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? " (21:31)

Is this not strong proof that there is at least something out there?

Some people need the words to be proof of their GOD. It gives them something to show to themselves and others. The proof of a higher power or GOD if you like exists because everything is a part of whatever it is. There are many things that make up the human body, and humans create many things, but it all comes from the same source. It is a shame that we can't give up our religions to do what is right for humanity as a whole and the world we share together. People of religion need to better explore the history behind it, so to see that GOD does not prefer one religion to another.

They are simply sharing the Good News that came from God. Have you actually read a Bible or other holy book before you dismiss them as rubbish? Why doesn't this self-referencing proof cut it for you. Is your mind closed? What proof can you offer that God doesn't exist? I'd be interested to hear your arguments.

there is no prove for the existence of god. But there is also no prove that god does not exist. Religious debates are pointless as long as we do not respect each others beliefs. So if we ask proof from someone who believes... than that is a paradox... if you would have a proof for the existence of god then you are not a believer in that sence you become a "knower". In essence all religions just tell us to be good people... a maxim which is true today as well as it was ages ago...
dont question someones belief if you would not want someone to come up to you and try to convert you

Because there really is no other proof is there. In fact I find it humorous how little evidence there truly is,I understand that when you go back so far in history the details get sketchier but am I the only one who has ever wondered why their is no literature that I have ever heard of the supposed ressurection of Jesus other than from his direct followers,an event which of course would have been a huge event, even strong rumor should have produced more documented historical evidence from the secular community. There is in fact more evidence from the time period of the crucifixtion of a rebellious slave 100 years earlier, and the funny part is that there are more people who believe that the slave I mention is a work of fiction, than their are people who think the ressurection of Jesus is fiction.that just shows you that real verifiable history means nothing when faith gets in the way.

Christians use the Bible because it is the Word of God. The Bible has been around for thousands of years. These sacred texts go all the way back to the time of Moses. The Bible is not a fiction book. It is divinely inspired by God. God wrote this letter through the use of human beings. All I know is that I am a Christian and that I believe in a God who is real that created us for His purpose and I know His Word is true to my heart.

from a Muslim point of view, i fink its jus kinda offensive when eva some` jus kinda comes up 2 and asks if there is a God proof it? so straight there the first thing done is said stuff from holy books, but sometimes i even give other reasons like why does every thing happen on time in this world if there is no God, liek why do certain flowers only grow in spring, and not in winter
if everything started wiv a big bang, then fink bout da question i have jus asked okay
oh another thing to consider is that when u light a firework, lots of chemicals mix to make that flame start, yet when the firework goes off, a new world has not actually started has it?
