Our church has an "Emergency Aid" fund to help local people in emergency situations like unpaid rent, utilities or those in need of help with prescriptions. This fund is available to people in our area all year long, but at Christmas and Easter there is an opportunity to give to this fund in honor of someone, in memory of someone or to the glory of God. I like that.

Ever since my son was about 3 or 4, we have always gone through all of his toys & stuff to donate to the womens shelter in whatever city we lived in at the time. Mostly in South Florida & in Atlanta. I have always felt it was important for him (everyone...) to understand how blessed we are & to feel compassion for others. Now he is almost 17 & we still have our ritual, just changed the stuff. We also cook & I usually help in the kitchen several times during the holidays...I volunteer as much as I can through out the year, mentoring or whatever. I used to help in the ESOL classes in his school, but running a business, by myself, now, I am short on time. But time & love is what I try to be charitable with.

We give donations to the shelters in my area throughout the year. If you are going to help it should be all the time not just during the holidays. The shelters need food, clothes, blankets, and other necessities. They would gladly take the stuff you don't use and give it to those that need it. Make it an everyday thing.

I plan on going through my sons toys. He has many good toys that he just doesn't bother with, and there is always a local toy drive for Christmas in my neighborhood. I know that some child would just love playing with them. Plus, it will teach my son the blessing that comes when we give to others.

My son's school is collecting toys. He has brought a stuffed animal, set of walkie talkies, a book and more all of which are new. I also will be doing toys for tots bike run. I don't just help during holidays. I help year round. (bike rallies for scholarships, attend benefits, do benefits, help little girl that has cancer which is my neighbor, food, clothes.
I don't think people should just help on holidays. There are plenty of activities year round that contribute to those in need. (bike rallies, benefits, cancer research benefits/auctions)

I ask friends and family to give to Vector Industries in Waynesboro Virginia instead of sending gifts or taking me out to dinner. A person needs self respect and self confidence and that is one of the things Vector offers. I give 10% of my income and my profit sharing as well.
Vector's mission is to offer training and employment related services for persons with and without disabilities from Augusta County as well as the cities of Staunton and Waynesboro. We also offer employment , basic education and training in Nelson, Rockingham and Rockbridge Countes in Virginia.

I give to organizations such as CityTeam Ministries and other similar groups that work with the homeless and less fortunate.
I do this throughout the year.
