I was supposed to go out with this guy about 2 weeks ago. We had been out before. We had talked that week several times and he called me that Thursday. We both had plans Friday so I didn't talk to him that day. When Saturday came I didn't here from him and assumed I had been stood up. We had a very good date before and it didn't seem like something he would do since he said it was the best date he had ever been on. 2 weeks past so I texted him yesterday and said thanks for standing me up that was brilliant. He texted me back 2 messages saying he was working Downtown and had gotten mugged and woke up in the hospital. He said they took his phone and everything and he didn't have any way of contacting me and he apologized for making me think he stood me up. I called him told him I was sorry for what happened then after talking asked if he wanted to try to go out again this weekend. He said he had a guy friend coming in town and he would call me today. Should I believe him?

You say that he couldn`t contact you. Since you went out before, did he not remember what your last name was ?. O.K., if it`s "Smith" it might take a while to track you down. But if he was really that interested in you he would have tried. Sounds like he could have had plans with someone else, and I`m not talking about his "guy friends".
But to give him the benefit of the doubt, there will be a paper trail to his story. (Police report, hospital admission record, & maybe an article in the newspaper)
You might want to ask yourself this question, as well :
Do I really want to get into a relationship if there`s no trust in it before it really begins?

I think it's a good idea to assume the best of people. If you already don't trust him, you don't have much to build on. You could (if it means that much to you) call the hospital and police and see if he is in there records for that incident, or you could just believe him. If he seems shady and you already can't count on him, move on there's really not that much invested yet, don't wait 5 years until you have a marriage, children and a house to find out you 2 don't really want to be together, discover those important facts early in the relationship.

Do you have any other interests, or do you just obsess on guys you date? According to what you wrote, you didn't actually have a date for that Saturday, you just thought you'd talk...and he got mugged according to him, so that didn't happen. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't; but when he's ready to take you out again, I'm sure he has your number on all the telephones he's ever owned, so why not wait and see? In the meantime, find a hobby...

Yes give him the benefit of the doubt. If he continues giving you a line then move on.
