It depends on your skill level and what specific camera you are looking at. All of those companies have good offerings with some of their models. In general:
Nikon has great higher end cameras. They are known for their SLRs including the D50, D70, D90...etc
Kodak makes great easy to use cameras. They are great for those people who are very unsure of technology and don't want anything with manual controls that may overwhelm them.
Canon is a great camera maker that has come great ultracompact offerings as well as some higher zoom and midrange models. Many like their SD*** line because of their size. The SD700/800 IS also include image stabilization and 4x zoom which is uncommon for cameras of this size.
The A*** line have always been well liked for someone who doesn't need to compact size but wants great picture quality.
What is most important is to go and try out the different brands yourself. You will decide which models are too your liking and your skill level. The go online to a site like Steve's Digicams or DCresource.com and research the models you are interested in. Only you can decide what is best for you.

I recently bought a kodak and is excellent. it can also be used for video for short duration

I think that the cannon is the best, but check out some comparsion shopping services to get a good cross section of the market. I used Wize.com (http://wize.com/) to buy my last MP3 player, worked out pretty well.
