Is there a good rule of thumb to know who much to spend on a children's birthday party gift? I don't want to seem cheap but I also don't want to spend too much either. Specifically, I have young kids and we are now going to a lot of parties for his class mates. We live in an area with mixed income levels and we are about in the middle.

I have thought about purchasing a whole bunch of books (from the Scholastic flyers the kids bring home from school) and saving them for this purpose...books are always a good gift, but can be pricey--there are some pretty good deals on the flyers...
Can't my kid's presence be enough?...sigh...LOL!

Every time I go shopping with my kids or alone, I try to get 1 or 2 gift cards of $10, $15 & $25 dollars. It could be from wal mart, sears, or from a record store. It is unexpensive and the kids get to choose what they want at that range price.When my kids get invited to a party I send the gift card. Or sometimes I go to a wholesale store like Sam's, Price costco. They have nice toys for girls and boys, at a very good price! $15, $20 dollars. I usually buy them for next time partys. Good Luck.

I wouldn't worry about the dollar amount. We were just invited to a child's birthday party and I made some dress-up headbands for her. They were really pretty with satin-type fabric and ribbons down the back and everything. All in all it cost me maybe $2 to make them but I think it was a fine present. Obviously you can't use that idea since you have a son but you might want to go to a birthday party or two and just look and see what types of presents people bring.

I have 6 year old twins and when they go to parties i usually spend between $15-20 for a gift!! kids arent cheap now adays!! good luck! Just to let ya know, kids love gift cards too...for walmart, kmart or video stores, they love picking out what they really want and it will save you time!!

I would only spend about $20. I also am going to a lot of parties w/ my kids and it gets expensive. Also, it depends on who it is. Their best friends who come over a lot I'll spend about 20-25 on. But, kids who I don't even know and invited the entire class....10 bucks is plenty!

That should be fine, to be honest, I normally try not to go over $10 otherwise I wind up spending a small fortune over the course of the year (most class sizes here are 30-35 children and with the school rule that the entire class must be invited when handing out invites could make it a very costly year).

We have a big family and my children have alot of friends and therefore we attend alot of birthday parties. Here is how I see it, if they are your family I like to talk to their parents and see what they are wanting with a price range between 30.00-40.00,( They do the same in return to my children ) Now if they are just friends then I think a gift between 15.00-20.00 is about the right price!!

For someone your child knows really well and plays with a lot, I would say 15-20 dollar. Considering they would do the same.
For someone who invites kids just to get more presents I would do a 10 dollar gift.

It's not how much it costs, but the thought put into it, utility, and fun! Unique stationery for kids who love to write, and draw; you can even do toys and stuff... or better still, look for great deals online before hand, and keep them wrapped and ready to go for last minute birthday invites.
