I just saw a news add about a girl scout troop who lost over 12k for a trip to Switzerland...I did sports in school was not a Scout or Brownie, but I always thought the reason to raise money was to help the community not go off on extravagant trips I mean is this trip really for the kids or the adults? That was why I bought a few boxes every year for camping trips, trips to museums etc...What are their purpose, mottos and so forth..I am not going to support them anymore if it is for this I will just keep donating money for my kids school and such.

Oh a Jamboree that is important...How about sending the kids to Boston to see the Freedom Trail or plan a trip to New Orleans to help out their economy and help them rebuild??? Isn't it better to learn about all the wonders of your own country before you explore another???? Spend a few thousand and go to DC or NY and then donate the rest for toys for tots or something..

Becky...If they do so much good how come the first thing I have seen in YEARS relating to the girl scouts is a trip oversees..the only time I see girl scouts out in my community is in front of a store or at my front door selling cookies....not volunteering at a hospital, nursing home, planting flowers, nothing..nor do I see anything about them in local or national news....maybe they should have signs when they sell cookies as to what they are earning money for...I would rather see to help Katrina victims then going on a skiing trip to learn culture...oh and cultures can be learned in school or by opening a book. Hey maybe next year when my kids go collecting for UNICEF I keep the money and go to France to pass out fliers about the organization instead of sending it to them..I have had a misconception of the girl scouts and I wonder how many others have.

OK I guess this debate can go on and on..I do not feel I am being small minded by thinking that the donation I make should be used better...DONATION..an expensive box of cookies that I could buy the same thing for dollar in the store they are selling in front of..I don't even like the cookies...I do it because I assume they are feeding the starving children in our nation, sending medical supplies to Africa and the such not envisioning middle class mothers, sitting in a Swiss Chalet sipping hot toddies after skiing all day...I hope we are not teaching our children it is ok to dupe the public thinking it is helping humanity when it isn't...any of you would say it is better to give than to receive yet you will earn money to frolic in Europe while thousands of babies are starving..wow 12k could feed a lot here and in third world countries. Yeah give kids culture in other countries is SUCH a need, while many die in our nation of hunger.

A trip to Switzerland would be to visit the Girl Scout World Center called Our Chalet. Girls Scouts and Guides from all over the world meet there throughout the year. It is not an annual Jamboree as others have stated.

Each troop is what the girls make of it. Some are very materialistic and want to do things for themselves with the money they earn from cookies and other fund raisers. Some do a lot of community service with their money. Our troop sold 3200+ boxes of cookies last year, at $4 a box and made $1700 for the troop. Terrible showing for the amount of work that went into the whole cookie program. So with them making so little, many girls do get selfish, as do their parents, and less is done on a community level.
That's why we are switching to American Heritage Girls. It requires 3 community service projects a year, no national cookie sale, or other sale for that matter and it's driven by the family, not a council or national office that is out of touch with the community.

the girls get to see how the troops in other countries work and they learn about other cultures so that they can be more open minded people. learning is a big part of the scouts both boys and girls.
almost every troop makes care packages for needy families at the holidays and they also have to do alot of volenteer work. You may want to get some books or go to your local girl scout office to learn more about the program before getting a little bit rude.
In addition to what i already said it teachs girls how to work as a team and as an indivdual plus how to be a better person as a whole

Its the Jamboree thing that they have to attend every year. It requires some amount of money to go whereever the event is held. Without help from sponsors, the scouts will never make it. I personally think money isnt an issue here because its worth for them to attend the Jamboree etc. where they can learn new things and socialize with other members.

they were raising the monies to support an education trip into Europe for a Scouting Jamboree. Jamborees happen every two ro four years and the cost is expensive.
in 1993 my BSA troop raised and spent two thousand dollars to send two Eagle Scouts to Washington DC and the jamboree. The Eagles had to match the Troop's funds with their own
Everything costs.

The money that they raise from cookie sales mostly goes to the Girl Scout organization to help fund camps, etc. A percentage of the money is turned back over to the individual troops for them to use to benefit the troop members.
If there's a troop of little girls out there who have the drive, energy and entrepreneurial ability to sell $12,000 worth of cookies by golly, more power to them. These girls have learned what it takes to succeed and are a great example to other kids.
I have never understood small-minded, jealous, self-righteous people who buy something from an organization and then feel they have the right to criticize what is done with their cash. I want to say to them, "Look--you bought cookies. Get over yourself."
