My truck manual says "use only MERCON ATF." My local (Bamberg, Germany) AAFES Car Care Center sold me Mobile ATF *transmission fluid,* said that was correct. They sell 3 different kinds of normal power steering fluid that all state will work in Fords.

DO NOT USE power steering fluid. All Fords in North America take Dexron or Mercon automatic transmission fluid.

The big misconception going these days is that only power steering fluid should be used in p/s systems. This is not only false but can cause damage to internal components. Ford has completely eliminated the mercon III atf, and replaced it with mercon V. Another misconception is that type F should be used, this is also false since type F contains friction material in it and can damage all systems built since 86. If all you can get is atf, as long as it states that it is dexron/mercon, then it will work, however, do NOT use p/s fluid, if you do, you will start to see the fluid turn gray and your pump will start to whine. The gray fluid is the aluminum that has worn off of your components.

So, can you use any power steering fluid on a 1999 Ford Ranger XTL Pickup Truck, or Automatic Transmission Fluid? What is the true answer, mine was clear until the other day when it turned red.

The best way to tell is to read the back of the package and compare the specification code for that fluid with what is in your manual. The Mobil ATF fluid should say whether it is Mercon compatible or not.

It should say on the package somewheres if it's Ford certified (meaning Mercon) if not.. you will have to look for some. And Ford is actually starting to recommend Mercon V now in place of the mercon.

Older ford ps pumps take type f tranny fluid. Type f tranny fluid will work in newer Ford ps pumps but it may cause excess noise. Your best bet is to use standard Mercon/Dextron3
