Requirements vary state to state. In Ohio, most larger agencies have a hiring process which usually includes the civil service exam, a physical fitness test, and some sort of psychological interview. Once hired you are sent to the academy which is around 9 months long.

Smaller agencies with smaller budgets require that you already have your Peace Officers Training Certificate which is given at various locations and colleges in the state.

Ohio minimum training hours is 620, several states such as Florida and Indiana require something like 270.

Your question should be:

I would like to know what I need to study, and for how many years I need to study, to become a police officer.

Answer:
Most police services (at least here) require some sort of post-secondary degree (not necessarily police related subjects). Once you are hired you will be sent to the police college/academy for training. Here (Ontario) it is a twelve week program and then you are placed with a coach officer for a few months while on the job.

Most major Law Enforcement agencies have a requirement of at least some college in any subject. NYC requires 60 college credits for entry and a 4 yr degree for promotion. You will received credits towards your degree after you complete the Academy training. You may also qualify for additional life experience credits for military service. In NYC must Police Officers go to John Jay College of Criminal Justice. If you had the 60 credits to begin with and you add the credits for Academy training and any life experience credits you may get you have'nt got far to go for your 4 yr degree....Hope this helps
