My dad had a piece of rental property. It was in bad shape the last tenants trashed it, breaking numerous windows ruining all the plumbing by cutting it, the wiring everything. We came in remodeled, and paid rent. He then decided that wasn't good enough he also wanted us to remodel at his house as well. We went there every day we had off and expected us to come out every night as well. We couldn't afford it with driving to his house 40 miles away and still get to work. He didn't care he demanded we be out there. When we went on holiday for Thanksgiving he told us we had no right to any form of personal time. We owed him. My husband wants to move NOW but we can't afford it. Barely able to afford a gallon of gas. My dad has other children too and they ask for help and he doesn't require "slave trade" from them or their spouses. Should we quietly save money up to move away as far as we can? I am greatful he's given us a place to live, but how greatful must I continue to be?

I pay all utilities, and yes I am very much telling the truth. I am hurt mostly that he is this cruel and greedy! The original agreement was we'd work off ownership of the house and that is why we settled on working for him too and on the house. Now the work on the house is almost finished and we are just renters and will never be anything else.

You have more than paid your debt to him and he has no right to continue to demand the things he is from you.

I say, save the money and move out!!!

If you are telling the truth, and I have no way to know that.....then your dad is not doing right by you. Do you also pay all the utilities plus the rent? If so, then you need to consult someone in the legal field. Becasue not only is this not right....I think you have 'renter's rights.' But to be safe, try to save up and move out. And don't allow him to control your lives.

Legally, no one can own anyone else. Get help from someone else and tell him to shove it.
