Generally, we yawn when the brain is lacking in oxygen.

When we are bored, yawning stimulates the brain.

When we are sleepy, our body is shutting down, and yawning is a way to re energize the oxygen supply.

I don't know why it is "contagious", but it isn't for me. That is all mind over matter.
