We have a young couple at church and the man is a US Marine who will be going to Qatar for the next six months. We're wondering what to give him/them to help them get though the separation. They always share a Bible at Bible Study, so someone suggested a Bible. Will they let him take one to Qatar? Someone else suggested a phone card. Is there a special card for Qatar? Where do we go to get one? Will he be able to use it? Someone else suggested a CD player or an iPod. Is this a good idea? Someone else suggested sending her over to visit him at the mid point of his tour. Is this an option? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Phone cards are ALWAYS welcome. To hear your loved ones voice is the best gift!! You can get a phone card anywhere, but make sure you look at the rates from that part ofthe world. It might only last him a few minuites. An ipod is also a great way for him to pass the time and a gift card prior to him goingso he can download a few songs from itunes. He can take a Bible, but if you can don't let it be too big of one. My husband alsways takes his on deployments.
Some other things that you can send while he is there are baby wipes, deodorant, razors, socks (uniform colors), powdered drinks.
If I'm not mistaken, she will not be able to go over there. That's a hostile environment and would be dangerous for her, but depending on his tour length he might come home mid-tour for some R&R for two weeks.

I hope that this helps.

Depends on how much you want to pay. Ultimately if I were to deploy I would want an iridium satellite phone (cost about 1000 dollars) which can pick up reception anywhere in the world. Essentially, it's a free ticket to call home any time the person wants. HOWEVER, Qatar is not really that remote (in the grand scheme of things) so the capability already exists there to be able to contact home often enough.

Oh, and you wouldn't want to send her over to visit him as the base would probably be restricted to her... in other words, it's a big security concern for her safety

SUNGLASSES ! ! ! the glare at Al Udeid is unbelievable. Step outside without sunglasses and you can't see anything for a day and a half.

Get them the best sunglasses you can find.
