If you get an HDTV monitor you will be getting a TV without a built in digital tuner(ATSC). What this means is that you will have no way to get over the air(OTA) HD channels via an antenna without an external tuner.

OTA HD channels are your local channels such as NBC, ABC and fox. These are available in HD(notice when primetime programs start they say available in HD) for free if you have an antenna capable of picking up the frequency range where the digital stations are. While they sell HDTV antennas they aren't any different than the antennas you have used for years and provided you aren't too far away from the broadcasting stations, you will be able to enjoy perfect digital clarity HDTV if you get a HDTV with a built in ATSC tuner(not a monitor)

Sadly you will probably have to subscribe to get high definition programmes. We have a set which is HD ready, but have not yet signed up to sky....way too costly at present....well we think so anyway...

Yes You have to subscribe for HD services.

But you can definitely enjoy HD experience with the DVDs if your DVD player is HDMI enabled!

Cheers!
