Some places do it in one, if they have the ability to make the cap/crown in house. Otherwise they do it in two. That's how mine was done because it had to be made elsewhere.
I also didn't have an abcess, mine was just a deep filling that irritated the nerve and it ended up dead. During doesn't hurt at all (at least it didn't for me), but afterwards holy cow. I woke up in the middle of the night with my face throbbing. Make sure you keep up on good pain killers so you don't have this happen.

The root canal procedure itself may only take one visit...especially if you are not coming in as an emergency. Enough time should be scheduled to complete the procedure.
It really depends on your dentist. Sometimes the procedure will be completed and a temporary filling will be placed until you are ready to come back for a crown.
Other Dr.'s prefer to fill the tooth immediatly.
Either way...you will need to crown this tooth.
At the crown prep. visit it's possible that a "core build up" will be placed. This is basically a filling. Then the tooth will be preped for a crown.
It is important to crown this tooth. There will be no nerve left in your tooth which means the tooth is dead. Eventually....without a crown...your tooth will become brittle and begin to break off in pieces. The crown will protect your natural tooth.

A root canal should not hurt, although there may be some soreness after the anesthetic wears off.
Root canals can take several visits, at least two. Mine took five. It depends on how complicated your root structure is. The dentist has to get the whole root (nerve) out.

Root canal treatment is normally carried out over two visits, the first to open the canal system, remove and clean out infected nerve tissue then left with a temporary dressing to allow any infection to settle, the second visit is to fill up the canals with permanent materials.
My surgery sometimes treats a tooth in one visit if you have little infection or the tooth is a single rooted tooth.

Usually, and to the best off my knowledge, root canals are done in one visit. I had to have it done over two visits but that was because my nerves were thin and it took and additional amount of time. As for the pain, I think that a filling hurts a lot worse, it was nothing! Good Luck!

Generally a root canal takes two visits.
First visit to remove the nerve.
Second visit to apply the crown.

Don't worry. I had one and it was ok.
You can get medication so you won't remember
a thing. If your dentist says no - go to another
one. I was awake for mine but my sister needed
to be put out.
