Basically your only job is to hold on to the ring, so don't lose it or get it stuck on your own finger.

They should have a rehearsal before the wedding day to show you what to do and where to stand.

I had to be a best man once, and like you I was dreading it. All you can do is your very best, and that should work. If, as you say, this man is your very best friend, then you should put together a speech that will really do him proud. By this, I mean the type of speech that has absolutely no badness in it (just a few jokes), but do keep it clean, and refer to how you are best friends, and how pleased you are for him that he has now found the right woman etc. After that you dont have alot of other duties. Just make sure that the day runs smoothly for him as it is meant to be the happiest day of his life after all, and he will thank you for it afterwards.

Best man! Its a big responsibility in a wedding. Especially its you bestfriends wedding. You cant be drunk. You'll help in the wedding. You can entertain visitor's in the reception. And even gave a nice song for the newly wed. I sure your bestfriend will love that. Tell everybody something that's good about the newly weds. You have a big part so good luck!

Hi there, It's a very daunting thought being stood in front of so many people, waiting for you to really make a mistake and it can happen very easy if you are uptight, nervous and slightly tipsy.
Take it easy before and during the main event, as your mate is looking for you to support him where possible. Alot of it comes naturally as people are aware of your duties and often do help you to relax too.
When it comes to your speech remember to thank those involved in the preperations and those who have helped with their part in the days events, even raising a glass to those people helps too.
Go on to tell some stories of your mate that may embarass him and remember to keep it clean. Laughter helps them to relax too.
You could also add in your speech that "History repeats itself" --- So many years ago ie brides birth year or younger, that the brides parents were putting the bride to bed with a dummy too!
Hope this helps!
Good Luck and have a great day!
Cheers ps Remember to get everyone (where possible) to stand and raise a glass to toast the wedding of the couple.

don't say anything in your speech which could offend any - don't tell any stories like when the groom gave that bird in Wigan one - which the bride doesn't know about!! don't drink too much until after - be charming - dance with all the bridesmaids (if you and they are single!) do anything you can for the groom to keep him calm and happy, remember the better best man you are the more likely the new wife will let the husband come out and play with you on Friday nights!!! if your naughty then once they are married she will have the power to ban it all!!!! remember to tell the bride she looks beautiful - say you have never seen the groom so happy or so in love. blah blah blah!! just be good and behave!!!!!

This saturday and now you are asking what are your duties?!
Think the great job bit is out of the window, stuff like this takes a bit of planning.
You will need to prepare a speech, keep it short, sweet and toast the bride and groom, tell the bride she looks fabulous and if she is having any second thoughts, you have a getaway car and the honeymoon tickets and just to give you the nod when she is ready!

yep... whatever you do, don't drink during the reception except for the toasts, and maybe 1 glass of wine with dinner... there's nothing worse than a pissed up best man telling jokes that arent funny. Once your speech is over you can go for it all you like! Oh, also if you keep the rings in your inside jacket pocket then it doesnt look like you're playing pocket-billiards every time you check "just to make sure" they're still there!

Your chief duty is to stand by the groom and DO NOT LOSE THE RING! DO NOT MISPLACE THE RING! Act as if he is your King and you are in charge of his most precious possession.., well.., not his wife obviously - but the ring. Don't be shocked if he refers to you as, Frodo.., I think this is customary for ring-bearer best men.

Beyond keeping up with the ring and standing by the groom's side, I don't think there is anything else you need to do UNLESS there is a rehearsal for a fancy wedding.., and that could get dicey.

Don't get too drunk! Just be very nice to people and if you are going to tell any stories or anything, make sure the bride and groom would appreciate it instead of want to kill you for it. Just make sure the bride and groom don't have to worry about anything. Help them (or do this for them) gather all of their things together before they leave the reception and make sure they have everything they need. Help with the gifts that people bring. Make sure they all get to wherever the bride and groom want to go.
