my appt for surgery is on the 13th of dec. i am scared and very nervous about this procedure, and scared about being put to sleep. i have never had surgery before. i am 22 years old with two wonderful children. i had my kids young starting at seventeen. i am now married and my husband and i have decided we no longer want any more children. i am worried that something might happen to me during surgery, and i won't be here any longer for my children. and this thought terrifies me. i really don't know what my risks are with this type of surgery. i ask the doctors and they tell me that everything will go smoothly and not to worry but never recieved any real answers. so any advice will be appreciated. thanks

okay, i am very positive that i do not want any more children, besides, i have a girl and a boy and two is really enough for me. as for my huband and a vesectomy--thats not happening. he refuses. and i am so tired of the side effects in hormonal contreceptives that is why i opt for the surgery, i want a permanet birth control. so this is my choice i was not forced into any of this.

It is an invasive procedure, but a very common one. Your doctor would not have recommended it if he thought you were a risk.
You wil have an IV inserted into your arm, and "put to sleep". You won't remember a thing, and might have some tenderness in the area for a few days that can be controlled with Advil or Tylenol.
During the procedure, your doctor inserts a camera into your navel through a tiny incision. Another incision is made close to your pubic hair line, and this is where the laser does the work.
It is ok to be scared, but you must have trust in the doctor's skills. Problems are rare. The most prevalent problem would be a post-operative infection, easily cured with antibiotics. Scarring within the tubes is probable, but less likely. Bleeding can occur too, but this is rare as well.
Have faith! I am sure you are in good hands.
By the way, I had this done at the age of 23, so don't let age be a factor for you. If you are 100% done with having children, then go for it. It is a decision I never regretted, and I was not married at the time. (I am now to the father of my children)

I had my tubes cut and burnt (no more children ever- it cant be reversed) a little under 2 years ago. I had just had my 3rd child and we decided as a couple that we needed no more children. When I scheduled my appointment, I was for sure that was what i wanted. I talked to the Dr. about all the risks and decided I should do it.
When I got to the surgery center they put me to sleep, did my tubes and i was released some hours later after the meds wore off. My fiance had to drive me home. I was sore the rest of the day but nothing major until a few days later when the incision was infected. Then i was sick for 2 days.
the only real problem was training my mind to say ok- this is the end, no more children from. Even though I really never wanted any more children I really felt at points like I had no right to do it. I would get depressed at points and then jump right back out of it. I really think it depends on how you feel about it and if you are 100% sure.
Also side note- i lost 25 lbs when i was pg, after the tubes were done i gained it right back, even though my eating habits never changed and i was more busy with the newborn.
If you are sure, go for it! It is a good thing for those who really want it done. And yes there will be pain, but it will eventually subside. Just take it slow and dont over exert yourself for a few days- let people wait on you for a change!
good luck!

I had this surgery done. Its normal to feel nervous. There is always a risk of complications when you are under anesthesia. People have allergic reactions to the medications sometimes. The good news is, you have a team of professionals in the operating room with you, and they will be monitoring your condition to make sure you're okay.
My question to you is, you are only 22 years old, if you don't want to have anymore kids, you could always get an IUD. If you are this frightened, why are you having surgery done? You both made the decision together, thats nice. You didn't both have the babies, you had the babies. He should get a vasectomy and save you from all of this anxiety. Going through childbirth twice is traumatic enough.
Seriously, anything that scares you this much requires more thought. Good luck to you.

22 is so young to have something like that done! Its your choice but WHAT if you end up with another man (we say we will be together forever but that isn't always the case) AND since you scared to have it done why not stay on the pill or something! You MAY really regret having this done one day.
Now to answer your question...
Try to relax this surgery is done many times a day in every hospital. Yes things can go wrong but the risk is sooooo low! And don't worry about being put to sleep they give you something in your IV to make you drowsy and once you get in the operating room they give you more stuff and tell you to count backwards from 100 I only remember getting to 93 lol. Waking up was the worse for me because I felt nauseous and freezing!
I'm sure things will go fine. And they should let you see the family as your being willed to the operating room.
Good luck Hun!

I had mine done and it was just fine. Just do everything the doc tells you to do, and you'll be perfect. Here's a question for you though. Why doesn't your husband have a vasectomy? It will be easier for him to have the procedure than what you have to do. Plus, that's an office procedure. No big deal. There is always a chance when you have a procedure with general anesthesia that you won't wake up, but you can't go in worried about that. The docs and the techs will watch you closely.
Make sure to take your pain meds, you will need them. It hurts like he ll!!!

there is nothing to worry about hun the doctor is right. I went to sleep fast then all I remember is the waking up and it was over! It is normal to be scared though yet like I said there is nothing to worry about. If you really want it then it is your choice. You do know though just by having them tied they are NOT permanent because that is what they told me when I had mine done so I done the whole package deal! That is the REAL birth control! Although I KNOW you say you do not want anymore I was the same way 8 years ago when I had mine done because I have a boy and a girl although last Nov. I went right back in there and had mine reversed so there are things you have to think about. I wish you ALL the best luck in the world with your decision!

I had mine done. The surgery is so common that it only take about 20-30 minutes and recovery is not to bad.
Not to scare you but are you aware of how it affects a lot of women after the surgery?
Your period will extremely heavy, and last for up to 2 weeks. Cramps OMG! If I had know what I would have to go through after getting it done I would not have had it done. I had it done 2 years ago and my sister had hers done 7 years ago and still suffers the same as I do. A couple of the women I work with also suffer from the same every month. But if you really do not want anymore children it is the best way to take of that. My husband said if he had know what it is going to do to me he would have went and got snipped himself.

You have every reason to be concerned. Surgery is very serious even though the procedure that you are getting is routine. There are always risks of infections, complications, etc. and it might be a good idea to visit the hospital ahead of time and to talk to some of the people there who have had surgery. Generally speaking, everyone that I have talked to who has had surgery advises against it unless abosolutely necessary. It pays to talk to many different people about it to get their take on whether or not you should go through with it.

No matter what anyone tells you your still going to be scared it's only natural. I just don't understand why your husband doesn't get a vasectomy instead of you having to go through major surgery? Mt mom had this done and she was 32 at the time she did it and everything had gone fine and technology has come a long way . You'll have it done and your kids will be there when you wake up and everything will be just fine. Good luck.
