No. The entire process was doomed from the beginning. Besides the fact that the operation was poorly planned and executed, the people of Iraq have too many long standing ethnic/religious differences. Just like eastern Europe under the Communist regimes, these differences were quelled by the strong-armed rule of Sadaam. We are dreaming if we think that we will force middle eastern people to become like us. They will not accept our religion or our western values. They will have to work it out themselves with our support, not our intervention.

It's really not a question of 'can' we. We have always had the ability to solve the problems in Iraq. The question is WILL we. Will we skip the politics and take the right steps to get Iraq's government going? Will we stop the corrupting influence of back office contract deals and spend money in the right way to fix Iraq's infrastructure? Will we allow the country to embrace it's own culture and not try to impose our will on their democracy? Their are a host of other questions?
I would suggest everyone write their elected officials and let them know how you feel about what's going on in Iraq. Make your letters honest and purposeful, but fair and polite. Screaming or insulting won't solve anything. That's kind of what they do now.
And, always support the troops! Always know the issues & vote!
2008 is not that far away, let your voice be heard!

actually i agree....i hoped we would stay and get the job done not just to bring democracy to a dictatorship but to also honor those who lost their lives there already. but the problem i see is lack of support for our soldiers both from the public and our government and its really unfair to the soldiers and they families to require them to finish a job we are not willing to support. bottom line we have done a 'heckuva job' so far....women voting, basic water, electricity and sewer restored, children returning to school (especially girls). no longer is there the threat of rape and murder when walking down the street. you may point out the recent violence and deaths but consider that under saddam's reign there were hundreds that died every month, slaughtered really for sport so comparatively iraq is much safer than it was 4 yrs. ago. all the positive is over shadowed by the fact that the media only seems to want to report the negative. so yeah i was all for staying and getting the job done but no more, our men and women deserve better and so do their families. no matter how supportive bush is or how concerned he is for our futures the fact of the matter is the american ppl and our own government has abandoned our soldiers.

We can.
The funny thing is that you seem not to have noticed that Iraq has a democratic government that was selected by its people for over a year now.
So you have just demonstrated that you do not know enough about the situation to comment on it.

I agree. we have been over there for so long you'd think that if anything good was going to come of it you'd see a bigger difference by now. unfortunatly I think we're eventually going to have to accept the fact that we can't do anything and they only want to destroy each other and get the heck out of there before most of us are killed off too.

Depends if we can get the Democrats to stop supporting the terrorists for a year or two. That would help immensely.

We have made some serious blunders strategically, militarily and politically. It's not a matter of "sticking it out" or "trying even harder". You are not going to make water run uphill, you cannot "force" people into "democracy".

Short term thinking. 1000 years from now what will be the difference. Like taking your hand out of a pail of water...there's no hole. You won't reform them to your standards. Time to go.
