Police do determine the quality of your life. They are the minions for the judges and magistrates who see putting people in jail as $$Big Business. Judges don't care about real crime or pot dealers wouldn't do more time than perdaphiles and rapists, would they?

You are absolutely correct. Did you know that because of Federal and State Prison crowding, they now house prisoners in private prisons that are exempt from any type of regulation or inspections? And did you know that those same private prisons employ lobbyists in Washington D.C. to lobby for tougher sentences and stricter laws?
Why would they do this?
Because private prisons get Federal/State funding per prisoner. So the fewer people put in prisons means less money for the people that run them.
We are witnessing the slow disintigration of our society because we have let the line separating capitalism and justice/democracy blur. Sad, but true.

Police do not determine the quality of your life in the way you are implying. They help keep our quality of life by keeping lowlife idiots and scumbags off the street, and apprehending the criminals that drag down society. They are not minions of any of the people you claim. They are servants of the people, in that they serve and protect them. They do NOT help judges put 7 million of "us" away, the people breaking the law do that. Put simply: You don't break the law, you don't pay the consequences.
If you want to get into debate about petty crime and the criminals who are doing it, and the apparently unproportionate amount of punishment they receive as opposed to a sex offender, you are opening up a whole can of worms that cannot possibly be explained here. There is case precedent, context of the situation, what happened, who was involved, etc etc. Judges can only do so much based on the confines of the law, thusly are limited. You do not hear about the many protocols that a judge must abide by in order to sentence someone; there is past history, recidivism in that same crime they may be repeatedly punished for, and many other standards they must adhere to.
One more thing: This conspiracy crap disguised as a question meant to stimulate honest intelligent conversation is becoming tiresome. There are other websites that would love to chat you up on this and any other subjects you deem worthy of discussion.

The politicians go after whomever the popular villain is today. Drunk drivers who don't even get into an accident get a stronger punishment than people who are simply always bad drivers and hurt someone else. But, since MADD is a huge campaign contributor, they made a law where you are guilty until proven innocent.
It's the same with drug dealers. The only people hurt by drug dealing is the dealers themselves, and that's only because it's illegal. If pot were legal, there would never be turf wars over who's selling where.
Vote conservative, and the true criminals will spend time behind bars.

Most police officers I know are working hard to protect society.
When the case goes to the DA and court, the officer can't control what the DA and Judges do or how long the person is sentenced. The officer may testify. But he or she is not deciding the outcome of the trail. The Judge, Jury, and DA do.

Actually, legislatures have more to do with how long drug dealers spend behind bars than the judges do. The legislators, in their misguided zeal to impose morality, legislated long mandatory sentences for drug dealers.
Judges typically do not have a choice in that kind of sentencing.
As for protecting us, the cops don't and can't do that anymore. They used to be able to take some personal initiative to pre-intervene with what they saw as potential issues. But with all the concerns over civil rights, they only get involved after the crime is committed.
It is YOUR job, not theirs, to protect yourself. Their job is to catch the perp if you fail to do so.
But don't blame cops or judges for this. Blame legislators and civil rights activists.
