I had just filled a $60 prescription for my mother and she passed away before she used it. The container was never opened. I wanted to know if I could get a refund on it and if so, how to go about it. It was purchased through a mail-order plan, not a local pharmacy.

I really doubt that they would take it back because there is a risk of contamination. Take it to a pharmacy for disposal.

The only way you can get a refund on medications is if the pills are put into a bubble pack by the pharmacist. This insures that the pills have not been tampered with or contaminated by someone touching them. If its a narcotic it can't be refunded at all. Its against the law for a pharmacy to take back a narcotic. These are the regulations for returning medications in Maine. I would call the pharmacy in your state the it may be different. Hope this helps and sorry about you mom.

No pharmacy in USA would refund a prescription unless they made a mistake.

No, it's not safe. From a pharmacy's point of view, once the medication is sold, we do not know what has happened to it. There is no way to ensure the safety and efficacy of it. We don't know if it has been stored correctly. Also, there is the memory of the cyanide tylenol.

unfortunately you are more than likely out $60 but since it's mail order and you never opened the package itself you can try calling their 800 number and ask. the worst they can do is say no.

You can't. They don't know if you have tampered with it or not. You probably didn't and they would be perfectly safe, but they don't know that. This is thanks to all the crooked people out there and we good citizens have to pay the price also. But this would also protect us if that were to happen and we got the pills.
