My 5 yr. old son's pediatrician prescribed the trimethoprim eye drops for pink eye. When my 3 year old daughter had it a few weels ago she had to see a different doctor because ours was out of town.....and that doctor prescribed the eye drops plus she put her on omnicef, taken orally. I know that was because my daughter's eyelids were also purple and swollen and she suspected a deeper infection. My son's eyelids are fine but he does have the pink eye in both eyes. Do you think the drops alone would be enough for him? Oh, and I am keeping him home from school today. How long are they contageous?

My children have all had pink eye a few times each. They were prescribed drops or an ointment, nothing else. The ointment seemed to cure up the pink eye fastest. But like you said, the omnicef was for something other than pink eye. Your son will be fine with just drops. The rule at my children's schools is they can return to school after being medicated for 24 hours.

As soon as your children start taking the drops the contageousness is no longer an issue. The omnicef is for severe cases of pink eye.

Eyedrops should be enough.
Make sure he is washing his hands a lot to help keep from spreading it.

Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are the only two causes that are contagious. They are spread by contact with the eye drainage or tears.

Depends.....

Bacterial is no longer contagious after 36 to 48 hours of antibiotic drops.

Viral has no treatment, except to relieve the symptoms. It can be contagious as long as the eyes are red.

Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious.

Actually, most cases of pink eye are viral, not bacterial, so antibiotics don't do anything. They give them to you just in case it's bacterial. My daughter used to get pink eye quite often when she was little and the one time i took her in, the pediatrician told me this. He didn't give her antibiotics (which was fine with me IF she didn't need it). I now don't run them in at the first sign of pink eye and it usually resolves itself. Apparently the little ones get viral conjuctivitis from wiping their noses with their hands up over their foreheads.... BLEH! Anyway, it gets in their eyes and boom.... pinkeye. I would think the eyedrops are probably more than enough if it's just regular old pink eye. If it is bacterial pink eye, then 24 hours of medication should make him no longer contagious. If it is viral, then just follow the same rules you would with any other cold. The other child would have to contaminate their own eyes to get pink eye. Best of luck!

All I ever used was drops for my kids. They are contageous as long as their eyes are all oozing and yuck. As soon as that starts to clear up then it is usually ok.

yes, there is nothing more you need to do and it is usually 7 - 10 days until it clears
