3 days ago whilst driving i saw 4 dehydrated Irish setter breed dogs. There was a mother a pup and two male dogs i called the RSPCA out and they came to take the dogs back to an animal shelter. The dogs are in great condition but were dehydrated,
What steps does the RSPCA take to find homes for these dogs?
If the owner didn't come forward would they put them down?
Did i do the right thing calling the RSPCA or should have i kept them on my own property and tracked down their owners?

dont worry, you did the right thing...
they will be under good hands...

the only time that i know of that they put down an animal...was when my friend and I went to bring a pigeon that wasnt flying properly...we thought they would do something about it...because the pigeon looked very healthy beside the fact that it couldnt really fly...but they hardly took a look at it and decided to euthanize it..then again the pigeon would not have survived outside...but maybe someone would take it home as a pet....

i heard that the RSPCA (the R stands for rescue, right?...in montreal we just call it SPCA)...dont put any animals down until it gets an owner...unless the dog or cat, etc...becomes depressed or crazy.....

It depends on the shelter and their budget.

While some shelters (few actually) provide vet care, premium dog food and great accommodations for the strays and cruelty cases that come to them. Many many shelters are unwilling or don't have the funds to provide this type of care to their animals.

Any many don't have adequate laws to protect animals in there jurisdiction from such cruelty.

They most likely will be sheltered, fed and watered and at the end of their hold period put up for adoption if they are in OK health. With regular meals they should gain some weight during the hold time. The issue is kennel cough, distemper etc.

Did you do the right thing? YES YOU DID

you definitely did the right thing!! the RSPCA will find them a good home. if the owner cared about the dogs, they would not have let them run about .

you "definately "did" do the right thing, they WILL take every step available, 1. to find the owner. 2. all vet care. 3. find them a home, if not claimed.
PS...be proud of what you done, you probably, saved their lives.
good luck.

You did the right thing. The SPCA usually makes sure the dogs goes to a good home, unless they can't be placed due to aggression problems or they are too ill to be brought back to good health.
