Abraham was not a Jew, Jews are the descendants of the 12 sons of Jacob, or at least some of them, and Jacob was the grandson of Abraham, These descendants are called Hebrews, and some of them were called Jews.

Abraham was a Hebrew, the origination of which is not 100% known, but it is suspected that it came from a Chaladeon word "Habiru" meaning a nomad. The word Jew didn't develop until the days of Esther from the word Judah because it was basically the tribe of Judah that went into the Babylonian captivity. The Jews are the physical lineage of Abraham so I don't see any reason that you can't associate the word Jew with Abraham. God said Abraham would be a father of many nations, and the Jews are certainly one of those.

well, I think your question is based on some odd logic, but I'll address it anyways:
Jews believe that the first jews were those people who accepted the torah at mt. sinai. So, abraham was not a jew. Nor was Isaac. Nor was Jacob. But they are our forebears and they set an example for us. They had a special relationship with G-d which helped pave the way for our existance. They are an important part of who we are.

As for being the called the children of jacob -- well, both abraham and isaac had children who would not become the jewish people (i.e. esau and ishmael), but all of jacob's children became the main tribes of the jewish people.

your question is difficult to understand but i think you are asking why Abraham is considered a Jew. He is the father of three religions, Judaism Christianity and Islam. Have you read the Book? I have read both the Bible, the Book, and the Koran have you? to understand what people believe you must read what they believe. Western culture developed printing and was Christian therefore the Bible has been widely read while the Koran has not. Read both for yourself and make the determination of your belief based on what you have read. Since the Bible is more widely read in is the popular belief. I challenge everyone even my atheist brother to read both. Abraham had two sons Ishmael the first born to Hagar and Issac born to Sarah. from his children the three religions are born. search the truth for yourself by careful study of all three. Do not accept what other tell you seek the truth for yourself

Erm, if you're sons of Jacob you're still children of Abraham! You're contradicting yourself! You can't possibly say that Abraham was a Muslim---> when Islam started in the 7th century AD...and Abraham lived somewhere in BC!

The first Jew, according to our faith, was Abraham.

FYI Issac was the son of Abraham and Jacob was Issac's son. So Jacob was Abraham's grandson.

The three main western religions are based upon Abraham and his lineage. He had a child with his slave and a child with his wife. One was to become the bearer of Muslim religion and the other was the bearer of Christianity and Judaism.
