Not sure about condoms but I tried lifting a bag of toffees with 12 large helium filled balloons. Not a chance. No lifting power at all. I would have needed hundreds.

It of course depends on the size of the person. But as a average sized condom could contain enough helium to lift 3.5 kilograms without bursting (aeronautic calculation - volume x 1.34 (uplift of helium) = mass), then it would take 20 condoms to lift a 70kg person - bet you thought it would be more! Have fun, and fly safely

As was mentioned, this has been tried! Well, maybe not with condoms but a guy named Larry Walters from LA, later nicknamed "Lawnchair Larry" tied a total of 42 helium-filled weather balloons to his lawn chair and cut the rope holding him down. He had it all planned out: he took a bb gun with him to shoot the balloons one by one for descent. Unfortunately he dropped the bb gun, and he ended up reaching altitudes of 16,000 ft, and drifted for 45 minutes. He drifted into the flight path of LAX airport at one point and was spotted by airline pilots. He eventually came down safely in a Long Beach neighborhood.

if you are 85 pounds in weight, it would take about 1300 cubic feet of helium to lift you up into the air. That's a balloon about 13.5 feet in diameter. so thats 15 cubic feet per pound/lb a condom is about 3 cubic feet fully expanded before bursting 5 condoms per pound/lb or 11 condoms per kg

This exact question was addressed in this forum not long ago. You get about one gram of lift per liter of helium, so to lift a typical person would requre balloon(s) with a capacity of 70,000 liters, plus additional capacity to lift the weight of the balloon(s).

it isnt getting 'up' thats the problem, its getting back down. A guy did this with weather balloons tied to a lounger in LA a few years back. He took an air gun to 'pop' the baloons to get back down.
He was last seen by a jumbo pilot at 40,000 ft

Somebody has a little too much time on their hands!!!
I'd say a few thousand. It takes 30,000 baloons to lift a human (14st), so at least 120,000 condoms should do it.

i think its around 5000 or more. You might want to watch Mythbusters on discovery, they did a myth that you could do that same thing with ballons.
