Try breathing exercises. Concentrate on breathing in to the count of three, holding for the count of three, out for three and hold for three. Take slow deep breaths and concentrate on the entire breath. This works for me and I have the same problem.

Try this exercise to sleep better and have an overall happier life (it seems silly, but it does work wonders): as you are going to sleep think through the day and pick out three good things that happened to you and then do your best to track the events that led to each good thing.
Example - the checkout out lady at the grocery store was very friendly and said my shirt looked very nice; now track the events - that morning instead of jumping out of bed straight onto the toilet like I always do, I kissed my wife on the cheek and rubbed her hands, this made her feel so nice she set out my pants and shirt for me to wear, this made me happy so I was smiling as I walked into the store and did not realize that I smiled at everyone including the cashier that would ring my order in a few minutes, the cashier felt better because you smiled so nicely and looked happy, so when you got into her line she was glad to see you again and could not help but be very friendly and comment that you look very nice today.
By the time you get through this exercise you will feel great, be very sleepy and not distracted by the bad things of the day, and you are much more likely to continue doing the things that cause you to be happy.

Have a notepad by your bed. If you think about something that needs to be done the next day, or week, write it down, and forget about it until morning.
The breath holding trick works wonders too, but don't expect immediate results. It will take a few days of discipline.

Try to clear your mind before you sleep of all your concerns. Don't think about any concerns or To Do list. This should help you.
