How easy is it to look after a dog with cushings disease??

I have an 11 year old female yorkie who has just been diagnosed with it.

Answers from owners whose dogs have it, no links please as i have read up on it already. What have your experiences been like? Thanks

I've had two dogs with cushings disease, and I think it was more painful for me than it was for them. I hated knowing that they might be in pain and I couldn't help them. One of mine ended up living for almost four years after her diagnosis, but my other had to be put down within the same year because of complications caused by medication they gave him for pain. You have to monitor what they eat because their dietary needs change pretty drastically. My female didn't really have any personality changes, but my male got to the point where he would bite at your feet if you walked across the living room floor in his general area. I guess just like people, it effects each dog differently. Good luck.

We had a spitz that lived for 3 more years after diagnosis. He required a special food - their dietary needs are different - and it was a little expensive, but worth it. He improved so much and his coat was gorgeous. However, there are distinct personality changes with this disease, and you should be ready for "odd" behavior. Biting and short tempered-ness is one of the traits, and unfortunately for dogs, that's a really bad combination. You should warn strangers and family, alike, that your dog may not behave how they expect.

Good luck!
