Well, my Fox Terrier/Jack Russell cross was bitten on the ear this morning by one of our three larger dogs(completely out of character I don't know what happened) It was bleeding quite badly but my dad put some flour on the wound to absorb the blood and it stopped soon after. However, the wound still looks quite nasty, should I take him to the vet asap? Is it likely it will become infected? Our vet holds a pet clinic on saturday mornings would that be too long to wait? Any advice welcome

you should be right to wait till sat. clean it up as you would for your own body and then while at the vet get your money's worth and get a once over. when we got our second dog the first occasionally bit the second, sometimes rather nasty but nothing ever came of the bite. don't fret it will pass.

I'd gently wash the flour/blood off with a little warm soapy water. Tap the wound with a soft cloth dipped in the soapy water. Don't rub it or it might start bleeding again. Then, if you have a Vitamin E capsule, snip a hole in it and apply that to the wound. Or, you could put some anti-biotic cream on it.

As for taking the dog to the Vet...see how it looks after it's cleaned and watch it for swelling. It depends on whether the bite is a clamp down bite (holes only) or a rip in the ear (it may need stitches). If the wound swells or feels feverish to the touch (compare it's temperature to the dogs other ear). That's probably a sign of infection. See the Vet.

Yes you should take it to the vet so they can take care of it. It may get infected if you dont. If you are concerned about the wait, just make sure you keep it clean until then. You can use a small amount of hydrogen peroxide and neosporin on it until then. Usually, most vets use that anyway to help clean the wound as long as it is small. The vet may also give you antibiotics for the dog if the cut looks to be infected. Please do go to the vet as soon as you can though.

Gently wash off the flour.
Put antibiotic salve on the wound. If the dog or the other dogs in your house can lick it off, cover it with a bandage. Keep an eye on it. If there is any sign of infection, see vet.

Best to take your dog to the vet if it looks quite nasty still. There is a chance of it becoming infected, so its best to just get it checked out. If you phone them first and tell them, then they will tell you if its urgent to bring your dog straight in etc. Good luck

get rid of the flour!!

use cotton gauze and some disinfectant like dettol(diluted) or betadine to clean the wound
if its a large wound, see if it can be covered with gauze and sticky tape
if the wound is still bleeding, better take him to the vet

Take him to the vet right away! You do not know whether he could have gotten a disease.

I think you should take him to the vet immediately - do not wait until Saturday morning. If anything bad happens to him you would never forgive yourself.
