I see so many questions and answers that are so badly written, they're almost incomprehensible: idiotic abbreviations, no capital letters, ridiculous punctuation, poor spelling. Mostly I ignore them because they are too difficult to read. Do people want to communicate, or are they just looking for attention?

I agree with you. What scares me most, is the sheer number of bad spellers here! What in the world is being taught in schools? Have classes in spelling and grammar been cancelled, and replaced with classes teaching, "How to rude, ignorant and selfish in the ME era".
I am glad that you addressed this issue. I thought I was simply being too picky myself.
Are people just looking for attention? I don't know, but my guess is that they truly don't know how to spell and have no idea what grammar is. The sad part of it? So much communication in this day and age is done remotely, and in text. Without essential writing skills, the communication between people becomes, as you said, idiotic, as well as infantile, with no way to really understand what the writer is trying to convey.
Best wishes on your writing career. Have you been published?

I agree with you.
I think that a majority of the problem lies with the younger people wanting to constantly text message each other. To expedite things, they use the letter "u" for you, "r" for are, etc.
This may be acceptable in texting, but it becomes the norm with some people over time and they forget how to spell or care less how they spell. This is not acceptable in the corporate world and it will work against them when they are looking for a good paying job.

Many posters will deride you for emphasizing this topic because they choose to follow those shortcuts in their comments that you mentioned.
I see thoughtful and accurate writing--regardless its form--to be most refreshing as it allows smoother reading and comprehension.
I write novels and short stories and firmly believe that if I want to hone my craft and keep it in peak condition I need to practice good writing in all venues--including this forum.
No, I don't see you too picky about this, but others do for reasons they call excuses.

I don't think you're too picky. I feel the same way. Many people on this site are incapable of proper writing or really just don't care. Ignore them, answer the questions you can understand.

I agree...but,
The spoken word is greater than any pen.
I luv u.
If I spoke this to you you would hear it as 'I love you'.
Do not heed so much to the written words of people that have not finished 1st class, that come from another country, that english is a second language, or it cost money for every character that I post.
Understand what they need, gramma will not save me, the spoken word will.

I agree, I hate when people don't spell words out or capitalize at all. I also hate when people Capitalize Every Word. Ugh! That's too shifty ;)
Just learn to spell, learn to type. People have to read these, and we don't understand your code.

I wonder that myself. while i think some things are okay in this informal kind of venue, like lower case letters, minor spelling mistakes, some things are so hard to read, that they become unanswerable. I think spell check would be helpful to add to yahoo answers.

Not really, but this is not a writing contest or an English class. Just answer the question you understand.

Some might be just looking for attention, others might lack education, others again might not care about writing style....

Just kidding...I know it drives me crazy too, but don't worry about it, you'll never change the people here, and most of them can't formulate an intelligible question or spell for cr@p. So you just have to deal with it, or choose not to deal with it and find something more constructive to do with your time...
