I started last year as a new year's resolution. I have been pretty good and keep it up most of the time. I find it has lowered my grocery bill no end.

By fruit & veg I go by the government guidelines of fresh, canned (no salt), frozen. Dried fruit, juice and pulses count only once. Typically I do it like this:

Breakfast: cereal, banana, juice. (2 portions)
Lunch: jacket potato with beans OR sandwich with salad in. Otherwise I have a snack of dried fruit with my lunch. (1 Potion)
Dinner: Whatever I have with 2 portions of veg/salad (e.g. gammon steak, chips, peas, grilled tomatoes OR pasta with home made bolognaise sauce (tomato) and salad ... etc'). (2 portions).

It really is just building up a habit and you don't have to cut out normal food.

Sonedays I will eat about 10 portions of fruit and vegatables in one day and then the next I might eat only 1 or 2.

But in my thinking this must balance out over a week I think!

I do it's soooo good for you. When I have eaten my five portions of fruit and veg, which also includes fruit juices, I don't feel so guilty when I eat a bar of chocolate, yum.

I don't like meat, so I've replaced it with a mixture of veg, beans and pulses. I can honestly say I feel better for not eating meat.

I also admit it does not suit every body, its about finding what you are happy with. If you want to eat more fruit and veg find a compromise you are happy with.

I eat at least 3-4 a day. I have two pieces of fruit at lunch and I've almost always got veg with my tea. I also drink fruit juice in the morning.

Oooh me. Easy. I assume you are British? I'm told it's 9 a day in the USA.

A case published in one of the women's weekly magazines recently (oh boy I hope this boy never grows up to find someone re-discovers it and humiliates him with it) - a woman's 4 year old son had chronic consitpation and weighed 7 stone (that's about 168 pounds) and she kept taking him to the doctor twice a week for laxatives and enemas. Anyway, she contacted this magazine and they sent some Supernanny-style woman to her who told her her son needed to eat fresh fruit and veg (rather than junk food). So this woman tried it. And lo and behold, he improved drastically within a week. And this mother says well yes, her doctor told her to do this but why would she listen to him?

Well, that's an anecdote utterly at a tangent to your question. And anyway, apples and bananas are nice to eat anyway.

I try - like today I put 2 bananas & 2 Apples in my bag - so far at 14.10 I have eaten 1 banana.....but on the plus I do drink at least 5 beers a day, which if I'm not mistaken contains hops and barley. If I pick up some chips on the way home or for dinner there's potato - probably fall over again and chew on some vegitation/roots - yeah I fink I'm alright today.... ;-) x

I do, but as a vegan I guess I have an unfair advantage! It's not difficult to get them in if you use them as ingredients in pretty much everything you eat. It's worth giving it a go at least (the 5 portions bit, not the vegan bit, that's a bit extreme for some) as you will get definite health benefits from it.

I love fruit and vegetables. I don't regulate what I eat and I don't think I am getting 5 portions a day though. Maybe if they made it cheaper, more people would eat more.
