you can definitly startoff with the s3is just so you get the hang of digital photography and get your skillz up and your imagination working. take as much pictures as you can and learn in the process. exposures? shutter speed? apertures? make sure you tackle those manual modes. as much as you can try to stay away from the auto mode, except if you want to just take casual pictures with friends and familes or something. but get used to the concept of composing photographs according to your taste and then when you know you can do better that you did before you started, go for the d50! or if in time you end put about a year after you learn so much, the d80 would have been just $500 around the corner. then you can start buying your lenses and making investements on better gear. better gear = faster and easier for you to express your imagination! but a $1000 camera will not go make you a $500 worth picture without your imagination in it. i say just go for the canon for now and rock on! (save the best for last!)

Lets see - my crystal ball says....... Just kidding. Only a few people have actual hands on with those cameras. Really too early to say which might have the best overall reviews.

Both Nikon and Canon have great lens. Some focal length lens are better in one company and others in the other company. No company has the best in every lens.

But, you probably will never be able to tell the difference if you are looking at the lower end cameras anyway. Buy which every feels best to you and simply get the kit lens that comes with it. Pictures up to 8x10 will probably not be any different between the cameras and the lens you choose. You will be happy with either unless you have some specific type of photography to do that requires special features or special lens. If you do, re-ask the question with those requirements.

First off, those are two TOTALLY different types of cameras. The Nikon in an SLR (Single Lens Reflex) which is very complex if you have never has everience with an SLR before. The Canon S3IS is an awesome camera and not too difficult to get you started. It is actually one of my favorite models. Canon also has neat features such as Color Accent where you make everything black and white except for one color and Color Swap, where you switch the colors in the picture. They are fun features and not hard to do. It saves you the time of messing around with photoshop too! Also, if you will be doing any action shots of kids, pets, sports, or anything where you will be doing continuous shooting, Canon is faster with its 3fps (frames per second). If you are going to be taking those type of shots, you will probably want to think about an Ultra II memory card (made by SanDisk) because it is 9x faster than the regular memory card. What this does for you is saves the picture to the memory card faster so that you can take the next picture sooner. Its great for any continuous shooting, as well as if you were to do any video clips. It is not camcorder quality, but it IS decent and Canon has the best video quality on a digital camera and most sensitive microphone.

Those are both great cameras but they're intended for different kinds of photographers.
The S3 is a 12x zoom point & shoot. It's great for just about everythig except extreme wide angle shots, low light photography, action photography, and shallow depth of field (for artistic effect). It's a good all-rounder but not a performance camera.
The D40 gives you the responsiveness, low light sensitivity, and flexibilty that the S3 lacks - but at the expense of needing to buy (and carry around) 2 or 3 seperate lenses.
If you favor the digital SLR, also look into prices for the Nikon D50. The D40 is still very new and a bit overpriced at some places. With the D50 you get a slightly more advanced camera for about the same price (it has better autofocus and it can use more kinds of lenses).

I agree with OMG. From what I understand the D40 can only use AFS lenses. That will substanially cut down on the number of lens available. That said, the D40 really isn't intented for the shooter who will be amassing a lens collection. It is more for someone who want speed that isn't available with a point-and-shoot.

If you only intend to do snapshop type photography I'd probably lean toward the Canon. If you want to step it up with your images do what OMG said and take a look at the D50 or maybe a Canon Digital Rebel XT.

in case you're nevertheless caught between the two digital camera, you honestly would desire to hold the two on your arms and see which you like the terrific. The D40 has been the main universal get right of entry to point DSLR made by using any maker. there are various motives for this as nicely the value of get right of entry to into the Nikon gadget. Many experts carry the D40 of their digital camera case because of the fact it may sync to flash at larger shutter speeds than even $5,000 expert cameras. The 6 mp sensor is particularly plenty suited for capturing something yet billboards or wall artwork of artwork. in basic terms some years in the past, experts have been using DSLR's with in basic terms 2 mp sensors and that they have been being revealed in magazines like SI, Time and assorted extra. As you have observed, the Nikon sensor is slightly extra desirable and the a million.5x magnification ingredient may well be certainly calculated in ones head if needed

I agree with most of the above answers, including OMG's and k3s793's suggestion to look at the D50 instead of the D40. If you think you are going to continue in photography as a hobby or more, you will definitely be more satisfied with the D50 (as opposed to either the D40 or S3-IS) as far as what you can do with it and how you can grow your system.

I have the S3IS and love it. It's simple to use, and takes excellent photos. The normal settings are good enough where you dont need to buy alot of accessories to take good pictures. You can opt for separate lenses and filters, but they're not necessary.

I only have one complaint- the lens cap seems to come off for no reason. I keep it in my camera case, when I reach in to get it the lens cap has just fallen off about 50% of the time.
