I can't get close to my nieces and nephews. I just have no idea what to talk to them.

Toddlers love colors, shapes, etc. When you with them tell them what color, take them for walks and show them tree, animals, and tell them what they do......

When my daughter was little i'd read her lots of books about animals and shapes and numbers...ask them to start .... and i'd would not speak to her in "baby talk" and now shes nearly 4 she can hold a conversation with adults and is clear and fluent.

Just talk. But more important, read, read, read to them!!!!! And, while reading, talk to them about what you're reading.
