I have a friend who has been eating foods with low carbs lately.....what specifically does a low-carb diet do to benefit your body? Why do people eat foods with "low carbs"? Are their any negatives to doing this?

I think most people admit now that No-Carb and extremely low carb diets are not healthy for you. More importantly, they are nearly impossible to maintain long term. Yes, people do lose weight on them, but the minute you reintroduce the carbs to your diet you gain the weight back. So why do it?

Instead of low and no carb diets, they now stress balanced diet plans focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, lean meats and dairy and "healthy" carbs. This means from fruits and whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat pastas.

A low carb diet is not good at all. When you exercise, you burn off carbohydrates first. Try eating reasonably portioned meals which are high in protein, and low in fat. If you are going on a diet, cut out all sweets and bad fats. Low carb diets are over-rated.

Yep - while your muscles can turn stored fat into energy to burn - there is one vital organ that cannot -

Your Brain - it needs carbs to function and think - so a low carb diet is really not the best.

time to re-evaluate
