Every Benji that has been used in the Benji movies have ALL been mixed dogs. Some male, some female. First one was rescued from the humane society, as well as the most recent Benji who is a girl.. http://www.benji.com/BenjiFacts05.htm
Benji is NOT a border anything..She is a mixed breed, adopted from the humane society. Read on the web site, check google if you don't believe me.
They want you to ADOPT a dog from rescue, this is the reasn they use rescue dogs..Check it out!

What breed of dog is Benji? How much do they usually cost as puppies? Do they make good pets?

AWWW I LOVED that film when i was little, in fact I still do. I come from L.A. and he made headlines over there!!
Benji is actually a mutt. He is a mix breed of terriers and small dogs, and was rescued from the Humane society. Partly to help raise awareness about the plight of homeless animals and partly to give themselves free publicity for the movie.
I have 2 mix breed dogs and most people will tell you mix breeds usually have better temperments, less health problems (pure bred dogs have very small gene pools and genetic diesese is common), and can be trained easier.
Mix breed pups can be found in almost any local paper or pet shop window and I have never seen one go for more than £75 (but that was with its vaccinations). I don't condone paying large amount of money for any dog from people who's dog has just had pups as it can encourage them to let their dog have more and greed takes the better of them. I'd say on average between £20-£40 for a mutt.

No, he was a mixed breed adopted from a shelter. But, the purebred he mostly closely resembled is a Border Terrier - but just a coincidence, as purebred Border Terriers are not very common in the US. Most likely, he was a Cairn Terrier mix. You can go to www.akc.org to learn more about Border & Cairn Terriers, and also find breed rescues. Sometimes the rescue groups take mixes that are predominately of their breed, so search away & good luck!

Benji was a mixed-breed. Mixed breeds can usually be obtained inexpensively through the papers or from the local shelter. Don't pay extra for a cutesy name, like "borderpoo" or "cairnoodle". Mixed breeds usually make great pets.
As far as Border Terriers, the ones I've met have been really nice dogs, but stubborn.

I thought Benji and Pippin were both cross breeds, probably Tibetan Terrier cross.
They make good pets because their owner is a professional dog trainer. They've been specially selected for temperament, and then highly trained.

Actually the actual dog used in the Benji movies was a mix bailed out of the pound by a professional dog trainer. see the webbio http://www.benji.com/MeetBenji.htmI
looking at the pics, I doubt it has one partical of border terrier blood YEAH many pound dogs make good pets.
