The origin of saying "Bless you!" when someone sneezes stems from an ancient desire to safeguard the sneezer's soul or to commend the dying to the mercy of God.

I actually have a friend that says it when people cut the cheese, lol, funny you say that!

The phrase origionated in the time of the black plague, as one of the symptoms was sneezing and nearly everyone who caught the plague died. So therefore people said bless you when others sneezed and it stuck really.

In the middle ages, everyone thought people were forcing out demons when they sneezed... I suppose they didn't think even demons smelled as bad as you cutting the cheese. ;-)

hundreds of years ago, before we had so much medical knowledge, people used to get really scared of becoming sick.. if someone sneezed, they would say "God bless you!" because they were really concerned about the person dying and they were asking God to bless them so that they don't get sick and die..
