So many of Christians these days wind up asking exactly this question! Because of Hollywood, and other misc sensationalism, Christians almost expect a bolt of lightning from the sky with a shout of "Go forth and heal! Raise the dead!" etc, etc.
I have asked this question myself, and the answer is to get back to basics. See John 10 to see part of the answer. It is vital to read this if you want to know when Jesus is talking to you.
Also - as I know that most will read this and feel a bit... lost. If you do not recognise his voice, then you need to talk to him more. If you are not praying regularly, and having him at the forefront of his mind every day, you will not hear his voice.
I fell into the trap of trying to hear him all the time, but I wasn't praying, fasting, giving, or doing much of what Jesus instructed us to do. The key is so simple and yet so undervalued by us Western Christians - read the Bible THEN APPLY IT TO YOUR LIFE. He wants to see that we are dedicated in even our mundane lives before he gives us anything more.

I know exactly what you mean!
the dichotomy of having many voices in the world is completely separated by the existence of God speaking out of the darkness and invisible realm.
on christmas eve I was sleeping in my bed when I beheld two images like unto angels of light lift me upright in the bed and while i was still blind and could see nothing but darkness I heard a voice speak in very bold words. I immediately believed i had just heard the words of god spoken to me, my eyes began to see out of the darkness the surrounding around me and both my brother and cousin were asleep in the room.
just a year and a half ago. I was being continually awakened by a spirit that would visit me almost all the time when I was just about to sleep. but on a couple of occasions I fell asleep with the radio playing loud enough to hear above the traffic. On all these several occasions I heard the radio talk show hosts speaking in my dream. but in one particular dream i had a job with a supermarket and i was using a dust mop to clean the store aisles and the voice on the radio came through as though it was the voice of God speaking to me in a revlation. but i awoke and my eyes opened and sure enough it was the radio.
Of course this has many implicatons to the severity of false revelation through sleep deprivation and mind control and the use of pharmectuticals and sorceries and witchcrafts!

Ok read carefully. God might have talked to you . If you ask for something with true beliveness you will get it but in the time God want you to give it. But according to your name i guess that you are thinking you got mad but i wont judge myself so hard because God is talking to me also not because Im thinking. You can know if God talks with you you going to have a different feeling you going to feel such a peace in the mind and heart if you did that what you ask God to bless if not it is not from God

You need to get a grip on reality. If you are hearing voices, and it's not your iPod or next door's radio, seek professional psychiatric help. Otherwise, just chill. There isn't a god out there to talk to you. You must stop deluding yourself. It's undignified to keep trying to hear voices from non-existent entities.

I am not focusing on any religion here.
yes u should doubt. it can be God, it can be the devil himself that just wants to mislead u from the light to the straight path.
Pray to God for protection and be extra careful. Do not do ur own interpretations and bring this up to your father/priest/whatever u call it. May God bless you.

Why is this specific to Christians?
Why not Muslims or Jehovahs Witness's?
The question shouldn't be 'why believe in Holy Scripture' but instead ask yourself 'why am I obsessed with critisising Christians?'

I would say that that is true for everyone who thinks they have heard the word of god. It is just an illusion but we all need something and if it keeps you content and happy then it's okay. If it has ceased to do that for you then forget it and find something else.

Does it conflict with the Bible? That is the acid test.
"Try the spirits, to see whether they be of God..."
Your idea may have been given to you by supernatural powers but you must make sure they are from God.

Well, there you have it, you are discerning. Keep checking, and examining yourself, the gap will close, and you will get your answer.
