I have just joined a new gym and noticed that some females wear bikinis in the pool area - what is the correct etiquette here - is it okay to wear a bikini for swimming, or only if you are using the jacuzzis, steam room/ sauna? help? I don't want to be perceived as a tart but it would make a nice change of dress!

As a comment to one of the 'answerers' I feel totally comfortable in a bikini - otherwise I wouldn't be asking - it's just that I seem to attract a lot of attention - so I mostly wear a swimsuit - and still get hit on...

A one piece swimsuit will be more appropriate here, as swimming is the object here and not sunbathing. I doubt if you could ever be perceived as a tart Rose.

You shouldn't have a problem with wearing a two-piece to a gym, as long as it's not a thong or a string bikini. I've worn those sport bikinis for years to both indoor and outdoor swimming areas, and no one has ever had an issue. I think the reason many folks wear one-pieces to a gym pool is for security more than anything else- after all, no one wants a wardrobe malfunction. The sport bikinis that I swear by are secure and comfortable, with much freedom of movement- and not at all horribly revealing.

Hi, I have been a member of swimming pool complex for 2 years now. I usually wear 1 piece swim suits which are comfy while swimming. Bikinis more of a show off and can also result in lot of tanning. there are many full body swim suits available in market. Look for pleasant colors and good fit in swim suit. also make sure that suit has lining or padding around the chest area. Its embarrassing to get out of a pool in a clingy reveal all suit.

My local pool only allows cozzies in the serious swimming part - I think they've had a few too many eyefuls from cheap bikinis going ping!
Personally I'd not feel safe swimming in a bikini. Maybe a tankini (which I think someone else suggested) or just a snazzy sporty cozzie.
Mind you, if other people are doing it, just get a nice supportive bikini you're comfy in and that you trust and it should be fine.

Personally I prefer a one piece but that's because I've had 3 kids and if I wore a bikini I would scare everyone off. I think when you have raised the question that your not really at ease in a bikini so wear a one piece.
Word of warning if you wear tankini in the whirlpool spa it all balloons up much to the hilarity of my husband!!!

If you feel confident wearing a bikini - go for it!
you could take a sarong to put on at the poolside if you liked.
If you have a good figure - a bikini is great - no one can make you feel like a tart - they may look at you if they're jealous - but you are the only one who can change how you feel. So feel confident, and go for it!

I believe it just depends on what you want to do.
If you are going to swim as an exercise, you better choose an sportive swimming suit or bikini. (Nike has very nice bikinis to swim). If you only want to go to the sauna or relax, wear whatever makes you feel good!

Id opt for a tankini top and bottoms or a swimsuit, I think bikini is more for the beach. Depends what type of gym it is and how casual they are really.

Do you chat with the other girls? Be friendly, and when you feel comfortable with some of them you can simply ask. This is definitely the way I would go, rather than wear something that I might possibly cringe about later on!

I think that a one-piece would be more appropriate here, because it's a gym and the pool is probably indoors, not a beach where there's sun and lots of other half-naked people.
