Because influenza is a human disease, not a canine one. Trust me, it's a good thing that we don't share too many illnesses! Disease crossing species barriers is one of the ways pandemics (worldwide illness) start. That's why everyone is so freaked out about the bird flu, because it can easily transmit from sick bird to human.

Dogs do cough if they need to. They're old, but not sick to make them cough .. or choking on anything .. thankfully.
Have you had a flu shot, or is it too late for that.
Maybe it's not the flu. Maybe it's something worse! See your doctor if you think you're sicker than you've ever been.

Did you have too much of your cough syrup? If it has codeine in it, don't drink too much, it is like a drug and it makes you ask this sort of questions.
