I just want to start off by saying Iv had Rott befor and I know that it comes naturally for them to protect. I got my Rotty (rosco) about a year ago with no intention of wanting him to be watch/guard dog. But the last couple of months strange people have been lurking around my house. He doesnt do anything when poeple knock on the door, not even bark. Which I expect consider the last 4 years of his life his wasnt treated very good. He just now getting over not peeing on people when there petting him. Anyways my Q. IS there anyway you can train a dog to bark or just scare people if need be? Or would that be asking to much of him? I dont wanna rush him or feel like im attacking or something? Anyways let me thanks.

i suggest you bond with him. and i mean bond properly. i assume u got him as an adult, so the puppy ties were never there. sit with him on the floor, talk with him. lie next to him and stroke his face. the more you create this bond, the more his need will be to protect you. don't just bribe him with sweets and treats.
create a relationship with him. learn his body language. learn his mannerisms.
be gratefull that he doesnt bark all the time. maybe he was beaten for barking before. if he makes a squeak when its the right event, praise him, give him a reward. you have to 're-wire' his responses.
maybe limit visitations to your place untill you have done this, too many people coming and going confuses him. he wont know who is friend or foe.
but bear in mind, if you are truly feeling scared or intimidated, he will react, and protect you. rotti's are a formidable foe.

Good question. I can see you really care about your dog.
Get some dog biscuits. Sit down on the carpet, at his level or below. Offer him a treat and get him excited about the treats. Then say"speak", then bark yourself. Do this over and over until he speaks. Over time this will reinforce his natural instinct to bark and give him more confidence. Treat him when he barks.

Then you might also enlist the help of a friend. Ask your friend to come over and knock 3 times at the door. Again get your dog excited and say "speak"! "who is it?". Repeat that. Ask your friend to repeat the 3 knocks at intervals.

After a few times of doing this, he should be barking at any outside noise.

Good luck to you and Rosco!
