Guessing, I'd say it's due to a lack of blood to the brain while standing or under stress or shock. When they hit the floor and are laying down, it allows the blood to flow easier and it gets to the brain again and they wake up again.

If you are near someone who has fainted, try to raise their feet higher than their head to help get blood back to the brain. Try to refrain from moving the neck in case the head or spine has been injured.

Fainting is caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain. It can be caused by heat, low blood pressure and other problems including brain infections and tumours.
This is a serious problem if it continues and only a doctor can sort this out.
