depends on the type of airplane. Passenger Jets cruise at altitudes between 30~35 thousand feet. Fighter planes would be flying much higher than that, and would only come below to engage in a dog fight or to dive-fire or bomb targets. Turbo-prop planes (like AIr Deccan) fly at about 15000 ft.

about 0.5 to 1.5 kms, it also depends on the type of aeroplane. domestic fly lower and international and other planes fly at a higher altitude. No idea about helicopters and gliders.

as far as military airoplanes,sub sonics 30,000-35,000:supersonics 35,000 + the higher they are the more ground they cover in less time,Hypersonic S.I. sr71 blackbird is capable of falling around the planet, much like a mobile space station stays in orbit using the earths gravity to slingshot itself around the planet, nasa ownes these aircraft now.Statistics may vary depending on job classification i.e refueller vrs. radar,both the same chassis but different job functions.
