Most people like red so this is probably your best choice. A Pinot or Merlot is probably better because they are not as heavy.

If you have some money to spend on this person though, then maybe you should go for a well aged wine or a wine which will do well by being kept in a cellar for a few years.

So the answer is...If they will drink it now go something light from around the year 2004 to 2005, it will have a little age and not be too expensive.

If they are wine connoisseurs get something form 1999 to 2003 or so, probably a good Shiraz.

Penfolds make great wines if you can get them where you are.

Also the french make great wines. You can't really go wrong with french wines.

Good Luck

one which I think might be good for a Christmas toast is Italian prosecco - it's a bubbly, which may be served as a pre-lunch or pre-dinner drink. Otherwise, I'd buy a nice dessert wine, which normally comes in small bottles - Australian winery Brown Brothers, for instance, produces excellent stuff - and is inexpensive....

one they will like and drink :)
find out their favorite label and get it for them.
if you dont want to ask, make sure its a popular wine that more people might enjoy.
I dont really like red wine, so I'm kind of stuck if someone gives me a bottle.Which is why you should at least find out what kind they like.
