I started the low carb diet on Friday, and have been doing a really good job of avoiding high carb foods. Today, I kind of lost track though, and ate more of the low carb stuff then I should have, so I think I went over 20g of carbs today. Not by a whole lot, but over. Is this going to completely screw me up? Thank you.

Just a little information on Low Carb diets. They were used first in the sixties. The reason they work is that your body breaks down fat in order to feed the brain carbohydrates. This diet, while working really well, was discontinued because of attitude changes noted in the patients. Low carb diets can cause deppresion, anger, and many other things. If its working for you cool, but you might want to be careful, your basically starving you brain.

I think you need to rethink your choice of diet. The Atkins diet is not a healthy one. Your body needs carbohydrates. There are different types of carbohydrates, and not all of them are bad for you. Look at what all the meat is doing to your body. Personally I believe that the only safe way to lose weight is to totally change eating patterns to a BALANCED diet. Some experts think that the Atkins diet can lead to colon cancer because of the lack of fiber since you are eating so low carb. The metabolic processes involved in using fat for energy instead of carbohydrates can lead to increased uric acid and ketones which can cause kidney problems, gout and headaches. There can be low amounts of dietary fiber on the Atkins Diet leading to constipation and chronic bowel disease. Some doctors believe that the high amounts of animal fat eaten on the Atkins Diet has a bad effect on cholesterol levels and can lead to cardiac disease. Bottom line is stop worrying about how many grams of carbohydrates you eat when you are eating insane amounts of meat. A balanced diet and exercise is always key.

You should be able to enjoy a little carb. Try finding the Suzanne Somers "Eat, Cheat And Melt The Fat Away" book. You can find it at Alibris online I think. This book promotes low carb eating as well, but you are still aloud fruit and complex carbs as well every day.

the only problem with going off Atkins - is that you gain all your weight back -

Covert Bailey PhD from MIT in human biology has a 1 hr tape about why the diet works - and why it is just temporary.
