I have noticed this frequently among my spanish speaking friends. I never felt it was impolite but I speak or understand enough spanish that I could follow the conversation. An intelligent person would ask you about anything they didn't understand rather than look at you funny. You, on the other hand,are being very polite worrying about it.

I don't feel bad when I same something wrong. Sometimes they laugh but who cares - I've never had any complaints. Most seem to like that I've made the effort. I think what pisses them off more is when English speakers talk louder and slower in English to them - as if this will somehow aid them in their comprehension of English. It's moronic. I've never had a Spanish speaker do that to me.
