If you are talking about SSI/SSDI, then the answer is...it depends on how severely it limits the ability to function, especially work. There needs to be a long history and it needs to be well documented and the entire frustrating procedure can literally take years (this is not at all unusual.)

I have never heard of someone getting that, and i doubt anyone could. Disability is for things that can really be fixed, or atleast not as easily as depression can be. Most cases of depression are easily treatable, and not only that the only judge on the severity of the depression is really the person who suffers from the depression. Not to say that it wouldn't be difficult for them, but there is no way to phsyically prove the severity of it. So, because of the inavailability to prove the severity and the fact that it is easily treated, i don't think anyone can get disability for depression. It's not the same as being unable to move or having lost a limb or something, it's a condition of the mind not the body, making it hard to get disability for it, if at all possible. If you are trying to get disability, i would suggest that rather than wasting time and possibly money on your pursuit that you use it instead on making yourself better, because if you are that upset that you feel you deserve disability i would think you would want to get better. I'm not trying to be insensitive, i myself suffer from depression, but you will not get what you want this way. If you aren't trying to get disability and you are just curious, my apologies.

Yes, it's possible, but I really think that anyone who has the energy to go after disability for depression, is not as depressed as they think. Now, if you were trying to get disability for a loved one who is severely depressed, that might just work.
For the person who said 'depression is easily treated' that is such BS! Have you tried antidepressant medications? They only make things worse for a lot of people.

Depression is a common reason for disability income. Factors that will determine how difficult it will be include severity, support of a psychiatrist ( does your psychiatrist believe that you are disabled). Co-occurance of a substance use disorder (this will hurt your case). Hope this helps

I know of a few people who did. It is hard and if you want to get off work because of stress caused depression, you will find the stress associated with dealing with insurance companies is about 10 times as much as you had at work.

I was granted disability for a few things and depression, well mental issues was one of them. I have Bi polar disorder and PTSD (One of my children died when I was 22). It was a bit stressful because they sent me to an SS shrink but he felt I was not able to hold down a normal job. It took about 5 months from start to finish on waiting to see if I would get it

If you have a good doctor, it shouldn't be too hard to get it...that is the key though...someone who will be willng to send the paperwork in for you...Sorry you are sad, and hope you feel better..the hard part, is the time consumption if you have the doctor who will diagnose you and send the paperwork in..

Being depressed does no longer mean you are able to no longer artwork. a large variety of depressed human beings bypass to jobs they hate every day. I had a job that that loathed for a pair years, i did no longer like the job, i did no longer like the long hours, i did no longer like my boss, i did no longer like maximum of my co-workers, and that i felt that the job made me compromise my morals on a each and every day foundation, yet I went in and did what exchange into asked of me besides, in no way calling in ill, and in no way taking a holiday day. although i exchange into alright compensated for my efforts, and it enabled be to financially take care of sufficient to take a job that paid much less, yet I get excitement from plenty extra. In my youthful years, i exchange into in a funk for a particularly a jointly as. My dad and mom (rightfully) desperate that I had no reason to be depressed, so they desperate that they might practice me how large I had it. so they despatched me to protection rigidity college for a three hundred and sixty 5 days. seems, they have been impressive, i certainly did no longer have something to be depressed over, it exchange right into a real eye commencing journey for me and positioned plenty issues into attitude. i found out that my perceived slights and courtroom circumstances have been comically petty. once you're marching around exterior in the rain throughout the time of February for hours at a time, all of sudden. no longer with the ability to bypass out with your acquaintances on a school night seems enormously minor. My suggestion is to take a catalogue of your existence, record each and all the failings you *desire* (nutrients, safeguard, etc.) and notice if those desires are being met. They in all hazard are. next record your needs, and notice if those are being met. verify out the record of needs that are no longer being met and be certain if those failings are because of the fact of aspects which you have administration over, or aspects which you haven't any longer any potential to administration. Be trustworthy with your self. some issues you are able to no longer administration, and that's merely area of existence, yet many stuff you are able to administration, and you're merely cheating your self in case you piss and moan approximately issues which you promptly impact. Be thoroughly objective, take own emotions out of the equation.
