after a cat is covered by a tom, she will come home and be all lovey dovey. roll around on the floor, and look very smug.
whether they know if they are pregnant, i think they do. it's a primal thing.
more than one tom can be the father to the kits. so it may take more than one covering to 'use up' all the eggs released.
when a cat is far along with her pregnancy, she starts looking for a nest. your bed, a cupboard. then you know it's time.

I'm sure they can feel all those kittens just like any other pregnant mommie...also animals know things through instinct.
